I was listening to today's show at work and it took a lot of control on my part not to burst out laughing in the office.

George invited Maureen Gaffney (Clinical Psychologist) into the studio to talk about positive aging. Actually, I'm not sure why he bothered with poor Maureen as he took over the item with his own take on aging and how he feels like a 35 year old etc...

Maureen was reduced to saying 'That's right', 'That's right' 'That's right'........... she said it so much she sounded just like these two

He's trying way too hard to live up to his caricature for this new audience.
It's un-listenable.

The only worse show on the radio these days are the guy and gal combos, having hilarious craic with eachother, on morning shows on various stations but at least these have music to limit their talking time

I'm still absolutely livid at this pathetic old **** and the way he went on 2 days ago. A man text in saying how he worked for a private bus company for €10 an hour and thought the Dublin Bus drivers were out of order asking for the money that they are. George then turns round to put this person down in such a humiliating way and finished off by saying if your happy earning €10 an hour, why don't you just go flip burgers.

I've been waiting to see how this show develops and have to say I agree with most of the comments above. It's a platform for ranting and raving, for wacky (I'm being kind) theories and opinions, half baked research, patronising comments and sweeping generalisations etc.
Fine, if that's what you want and like, but it isn't a current affairs programme - it's barely a news programme and it is certainly a poor replacement for the previous show and no real competition for either RTE R1 or any local radio lunchtime news.
Yesterdays interview for example with the professor from UCC about allergies was a disaster - he corrected and contradicted George at every turn, showed the perils of reading headlines without delving deeper into an article and what could have been an interesting item became a shambles.
It may rock some boats (mostly those of grumpy old men with free travel passes I'd say) - and maybe they have done their research and know their target, but I'm out for now.

I heard that yesterday. I couldn't believe how nonchalantly George was throwing his half-formed opinions around, and how quick he was to contradict himself when the professor disagreed with him. Last time I give him a chance on air. As others have said though, there's now an unlistenable hole from 12-1 across all national stations for me.

Listened to Here Come the Girls on High Noon with George, somebody needs to get their finger out and put some better topics together for discussion. Dr. Ciara had already spoken about childhood obesity, raised interesting points in her discussion at the start of the show yet George had to trudge through similar points again with the so called girls on the panel. I don't know what it is about the show but it is certainly lacking something and I would agree with another poster that Newstalk are trying too hard to mimic other chit-chat shows on other radio stations.

Do they think men will listen to the radio version of Midday or Loose Women ?

This whole new schedule and line up has been a disaster. The morning show is car crash radio (mainly due to Williams but Fitzpatrick and Quinlan are no great shakes either) and the drive time show sounds like two transition year students have been let into the studio.

I completely agree with both of you, whilst health matters etc are important to highlight but these Newstalk shows hosted by George take the listener on a complete benge of childhood obesity discussion as though to just fill in airtime. In my opinion the three female guests George had on the panel today had no new revelations to add to the sound bytes that have been thrown out there time and time again.

I can't stand when media has to make a big thing of having three women in for half an hour with that stupid here come the girls intro tune and prior to the lead up to the show with Pat Kenny refer to them as feminists. I am doubtful of tuning in next Friday tbh and it appears to be the same with other posters of this thread.

it seems to be utterly cynical to me.

for the show its self its grand but im off at 1pm when the news at one starts on RTE.

This isn't really fair, but it is true.

I switched on NT there. Caught some ads, a clip from Hilary, then one sentence from George.

Now deciding which podcast to listen to.

Back from ads, a several minute monologue from George, in which he rubbishes Mary Robinson's suggestion we should all go vegan, and then says our entire Olympic team is tainted because two of the boxers were betting.

My problem is, this was all unopposed. Just him giving his own opinion in a semi aggressive style. What's the point in that?

Sure that was the formula of his early evening show. His rant after the Paris terrorist attacks where he more or less congratulated himself about his objections against the wide spread immigration into Europe was the final straw for me.

I just cant take him seriously at all.

The alternative to George would be Shane Coleman and Chris Donoghue who's opinions are manufactured by the prevailing opinion of the politically correct brigade.

Yes George is annoying condescending but at least he has an opinion, an opinion you may only agree with at best 50% of the time, but at least it isn't another bland radio programme which seems to have invaded the Newstalk schedules.

George continue your rants, will agree occasionally but at least you're not a cardboard cutout of a presenter like Coleman and Donoghue.

In fairness he used to live in the U.S. He coached their national rugby team, so I guess he picked up a bit of preppie slang, he often refers to women as 'dames'.

Wouldn't be a particular gripe for me personally. It's his bullish, monochrome view of the world I'd take issue with. He cannot distinguish see shades of grey. Everything is either 100% awful or 100% wonderful.

George trying his best to criticise the health service with this guys story now. Poor guy is trying to raise awareness and donations for people like his son. George did a big spiel starting "Is it not your opinion......." basically that irish health service was poor compared to Germany. George doesnt ask questions, he gives you an answer and asks you to agree with it. The guy got around it. They should put George and Ray Darcy on together, different opinions but similar style
