I was all set to become a racist until I saw this advert. Having viewed the advert, now I think I'll have to shelve my plans.

Seriously though, does this crap actually stop anybody at all from being racist?

Went to see my nephew play his first seven aside match against another team recently. They absolutely hockeyed the other team. After every goal the celebration was a dab. And there was exaggeration and feigning in tackles. Kids are impressionable.

If a kid see's that ad and goes "Zlatan says racism is bad, I'm not going to be racist" it's job done.

Most of footballs stuff like that, or the respect campaign for referees and fellow players, is for children who are easily impressionable.

A functioning adult should not require explaining as to why racism is not a good thing.

Well years ago, before UEFA cracked down on it; racism in football was pretty common. Players were regularly abused on the field by fans and opposing teams.

Doesn't happen so much now, and when it does there are huge penalties. So yeah, obviously it does work. Maybe it'd work just as well with only the penalties. Ads like that just send the message that it won't be tolerated within the organisation.

I think you'd need to be pretty naive to think that it's intended to stop individuals from actually being racist.

In ancient Greece anyone who was odious or reprehensible to the general citizenry was marched out to the boundary of the city-state and told if they stepped inside the bounds again they were dead. Ejecting anti-social elements.

The modern equivalent (there is no boundary to our world civilisation) is to either lock someone in a cell or kill them, if they are an anti-social element. So while people are free to be racist, we as a people are free to lock them in a concrete room until they die. The glory of civilisation.

I think if you attribute a lower value to a human being because of their race you are being racist. I don't see any ambiguity in that one. Do you?

Won't that just lead to people saying "I'm not a racist, but..."?
There's no reflection, no explanation, nothing but an entirely empty phrase.

But that's not what the lefty progressives want. And they are not society. That's why we don't agree on what racist beyond what is normally considered racist. Take Islamophobia.

I was talking within the scope of the original post. Football racism eg throwing bananas on to the pitch, is fairly clear cut.

In terms of how western society addresses islamic fundamentalism and its violent and destabilising influence is a complicated question which may include racism, self preservation and a host of other things. If we are moving the goal posts in that direction I feel a head ache coming on.

It's obviously supposed to persuade supporters and players not to openly racist during games as opposed to expecting a magical eradication of racist feelings and thoughts.

Sure does. The amount of racists who have given it up after seeing the Uefa and Fifa ads is huge, so you are not alone. Was one myself. Actually thought UEFA was all for racism myself, so thought it was the way to go. But how wrong can you be? Once I saw the ad I realised UEFA advises against it, so knew I had better fall into line. Gave away all my gear, stopped using the old chants, welcome other races openly now, changed the way I vote, retired a lot of my jokes, etc. Still hanker after the old days a bit now and again, but overall, its probably better this way. Anyway, UEFA knows best.
