For those of you looking for something a bit more versatile than a cabriolet..theres this, 2.0t estate with NCT to 6/17 for €600. Claimed fsh but it looks like the book stopped being stamped at 140k. Still though, a cheap car if you could get it for about €500!

My first bangernomics purchase was a pristine low mileage 10 year old Saab 9-5 for €1,350. Kept it for 2 years and sold it for €1,250 with a slight engine oil leak and a dead alarm battery. Insurance for me would be €1k with €2k for tax and then a 3.2L guzzler. It would cost an arm and leg to run for 1 year and would not be economical for me at all.

It is lovely though and if I could afford to run it, I would love to have one for a while at least!

Bangernomics relevant insurance post.

Renewal came up for my 2002 E39 525i policy on 123.ie and got quoted €787. I thought I might be locked into existing insurer as my car is now 14 years old and figured other quotes would be more expensive (they were).

I was wondering if the big rise in premium had to do with the car being old (i.e. did I need to sell and move to a 2007 or 2008).

So I wanted to test what effect car age & power had on the quote with my existing insurer with nothing else changing.

I checked two newer cars, a 180BHP 2007 9-5, and a 110BHP 2007 1.6L Avensis, both at same 2k value as the E39. The Avensis was identical to the E39. The Saab was €80 more than the E39.

I also got a quote for this one for the craic (because I had the page open) - quote was €1066, and the 02-CW-304 Merc listed somewhere here was €996 (all valued at €2k for the purposes of this comparison).

Big thanks to the sound guy at 123 who checked the different cars' quotes for me.

I went looking elsewhere for quotes on the E39, and got some massive quotes (many over €1200-1600). But I did get a quote from BOI - but underwritten by RSA same as 123 - that was cheaper than my existing. Full details here.

Posting this here as I know the car age vs insurance question is a big consideration for a lot of folks.

Next year insure it as a classic (15yrs for Bmw's) and buy a micro car for the daily driver policy.

The 320 v6 on the merc is a fine engine and not too bad for mpg. If you can stomach 1,809 tax it's a very fine motorway muncher.

But as hullabaloo said, it's not just the tax.
Insurance on a 10 or 12 year old car plus short trips would kill off any savings on the cheap purchase price.

This. Have the same engine in a 2001 CLK and it's an absolute peach. Honestly one of the smoothest engines I have ever driven. As reliable as anything as well.

For some of us (old enough and never crashed) insurance is no longer an issue:D;)

I have also seen a lot of rust and bubbling issues on the wheel arches from that generation. Most noticeable on the banged up never washed ones.

Me too! I might be slightly biased but I think that is one of the few cars that a spoiler suits! I prefer the leather interior though.
