Went to check my bank balance this morning...

... and a company whom I have dealt with in the past is after lodging 20k to the account, out of the blue.

As an alternative to coke & hookers, what's the procedure here? Wait for them to contact me? (could take ages, they're a big company and the 20k isin't a lot to them) - do I contact them? Ideally i'd like the bank to do a reversal, rather than me lodge it back to them, as I don't need a 'transaction' like that appearing on my statements!

Or do I put it all on black?

You contact the bank and contact the company in question. Pretty sure it's illegal as well as being immoral for you to pretend you didn't see anything.

I also wouldn't count on the companies finance guys not noticing, big company or not.

You get on to the company who lodged it and tell them they left you 30k short.

Then you pass on my bank details to them and tell them i would like to do business with them too. They sound great to deal with.

OP, this the latest social media trend, a form of chinese whispers where you pass it onto the next person. It's a trust game to see if the last person got the amount that was originally passed on. I'll PM you my bank details so you can continue the game.

If you were to spend any of this money it would effectively be theft by deception.

Even though you didnt solicit the money going into your account, you do not own and they are entitled to recover said funds.

Best to get onto them with the transaction code for lodgement and explain they have dropped €20k into your account and for them to request a reversal of lodgement immediately.

Best also do this by email or writing to keep record of logs to avoid any future headaches with this situation.

Do you have any higher interest savings accounts that you can 'rest' the money in until you get it sorted? Deal with them by post only as you will want a full paper trail too, drag it out long enough and you might earn the price of cup of tea.

What would happen to the interest, granted 20k isnt going to increase much but in a magical world where by accident €20m is lodged into my account and I dont tell anyone for a year, who gets to keep the interest

Does your bank pay interest on current accounts? I'd be inclined to leave it there gathering interest until such time as the company noticed and requested it back. Even at a quarter of a percent interest, if it took them a year to notice, it'd be €50 in your pocket. Even if it took a month, it's the price of a pint.

Unless you're hoping to do more work for them, I'd be inclined to let them worry about it.

Any interest earned would belong to whomever owns the asset which generated the interest.

Your bank will be able to see when you logged in to check your balance, so any delay on your behalf to take action to kick back the funds will be noted

Should be a fairly simple process

This is terrible advice OP.

Quietly stick it in another account and wait to see if someone comes looking for it. If they don't then let the principle of finders keepers guide you.

I speak from personal experience here - many moons ago the bank stuck 3grand in my account by mistake, I was skint at the time and my friend was getting married soon, I used the money for a nice suit, the stag do and the wedding and figured I'd have to pay it back when they came looking.
They never came looking - i never went telling - I count that as a good result, my conscience is crystal clear:D

Im presuming this is a business account. You are obviously going to end up returning the money. I presume they made an online payment and have put in the wrong entry in the creditor section.

Ring whoever in the company you are most likely to be dealing with in the future and let them know and be as helpful as possible in returning the money. The goodwill could help you get a better deal if purchasing from them in future or help with selling to them in future.

Aren't they supposed to pay €13billion back?

Perhaps this €20,000 is a payment (plus penalties / interest) for every citizen in the state.

I caved and contacted the company. I've to write a letter instructing them to take out of my account and put back in theirs.

Pain in the arse, considering I didn't do anything wrong. Tempted to charge an admin fee but for the sake of keeping relations good i'll write the time off... this time.

You should give it back to them, albeit in cryptic fashion.

Using the 20k, buy a car (something like a Kia Cee'd, €19,650) and park it in front of their main offices. Post them the keys to it, but don't leave a note or return address. Let them figure it out for themselves.
