These lads doing the 50 km race walk are some sort of perverted masochists.

French guy went out hard was leading for most of the race, collapses on the ground around 35 km, takes a minute then gets up and keeps going!! Currently in 7th place.

Would be great if Rob Hefferenan could get on the podium here. Robbed of the chance in London and only awarded his bronze a few months ago for it.

Olympic walking is in the same bag as butterfly swimming for me. Pointless endeavour and it looks stupid. I do have a weird respect for the people who do it.

yep

and i suppose you could get a prefabricated aluminimum cavity tray created to match the curve, but thats expensive.

using the standard one, i cant see how youd do it without cutting, id imagine youd need an individual one on practically every block.

Would they overlap and each individual joint taped? Never actually thought of the work involved in a curve.

I did a lovely curved bulkhead recently for a client and used a flexible conduit to get my curve. It was a double "s" and I have to say it was very impressive when it was finished!!

I'm not defending your fella Hickey, but does he need to be locked up in a maximum security jail in Rio? I can't imagine that that would be the nicest place in the world.

Anyway I see the Paralympics is in serious trouble now with substantial cuts. 10 countries may no longer be able to send teams and only 12% of tickets sold. Rio has really failed to deliver for the Paralympians.

It's maybe an unfair comparison and it was always going to be hard for Rio to compete with what London and Beijing achieved, but I can't help but feel that given their time again the IOC may have voted for another host city. Madrid was the main rival. I suppose you couldn't have had two European Olympics in a row.

There is a small part of me that feels compelled to be sympathetic. But there is a much larger part that reflects on generations of sports people that have been completely failed by this man's greed and desire for power.

I hope he serves a small but justified sentence <REDACTED> and then we never ever hear of him again, his legacy and reputation eternally tarnished.

I hope this is a turning point for sports in Ireland but I'd imagine if there is a choice between a fresh start and more of the same, we'll get more of the same (probably John Delaney).

As regards Rio, the last thing they needed and the last thing most people there wanted, was the Olympic games. It's as wantonly corrupt as Fifa, maybe moreso as there are so many different working parts with all the different sports.

This particular games seems to have had a very disenfranchised effect however.

There is a cold spot in hell for ticket touts. And it'll feel like the five star hotel he was arrested in compares to a Brazilian jail.

But seriously, this guy has had a long an illustrious career of being a Jerk. 27 years he's been president, and if he's been up to this nonsense for even half that time while producing diddly squat in terms of results I have limited sympathy.

IMO Hickey just reflects what goes on in Ireland all the time. Look at Lowry still working away in Tipperary.

Unless Ireland as a nation says we will vote for people on merit and not turn a blind eye cos they do favours for us locally, this carry on will persist.

Hopefully not a whiff of this sort of stuff round the IRFU otherwise it could jeopardise the RWC bid.

Madrid came second in the bidding for this one for example.

I think Ireland is less corrupt than nepotistic, or cronyism.

Sure there's a bit of straight up good old fashioned bribery/corruption but there's far more just appointing average Joe who you know, rather than better-qualified Joe from the next town.

I will no doubt be open to accusations of bias but I genuinely do think NZ is less corrupt. It's less socially acceptable than in Ireland and the law, which is stricter, is more easily applied at less expense and without constant recourse to tribunals.
