Detailing chat

Hi I've been thinking it'd be nice to have a thread where simple questions that people don't want to create a thread for, could go. Or any chat related to detailing.

I've a question. If I've put a wax on, then a sealant. Then after a few weeks or w/e I'm thinking the shine isn't what it was. (After washing obviously) Can I apply wax on top of whatever sealant and wax is left from the first time, or do I have to remove the remaining sealant + wax first?

Lads,
never really been one to spend much time cleaning the car,(always used the 2 bucket method tho)
but now I have a decent one I plan on getting into it a bit.

Going to pick up a few bits in halfrauds or maybe micks garage.
what do you recommend to get started? (exterior)
Say a 50e budget?

Stay away from wash and wax for starters.

Honestly look up detailingshed.com you will get all of the best of gear.

Some stuff you may say oh I wouldn't spend that but in the end the results speak volumes.

Meguiars stuff is good but a lot of it is overpriced. I wouldn't bother with the AG Aqua wax as it's fairly rubbish. Go for Collinite 845 instead.

If you want to stick to Meguiars then I'd be going for their Ultimate wax. It's in a black bottle I think. Either that or Meguiars Gold Class wax to go with the shampoo.

How does the likes of Collinite 845 compare with Autoglym HD Wax? Is the HD worth the extra cost? Also i've been using Autoglym Super Resin Polish. I like it but i'd like to try other brands. Any recommendations?

I would highly recommend Gold class shampoo. One of the best I've used.

Also Farecla G3 waxes are decent quality, which Halfords stock.

Two slightly different products but both very good. If you are using AG Super Resin Polish, then stick with the AG HD Wax.
If AG HD Wax was produced by another manufacturer, it would probably be a higher price, but AG's reputation goes before them, and they have to limit the price.
For the money, its hard to beat Collinite 845.

Right so I got

-Meguiars Gold Class Car Shampoo and Conditioner
-Meguiars Quik Clay Starter Kit
-Meguiars Ultimate Liquid Wax

Those 3 with a few cloths etc etc and a new bucket came to 66e.
The GTI is going in for a major service Friday so hopefully I can get it sparkling on Saturday

Wash >>> NOT WITH A SPONGE > so use what?
Dry >>> NOT WITH A CHAMOIS > so use microfiber?

Wash with a mitt - lambswool or microfiber
Dry with a drying towel - microfiber

Lambs wool mitt would be the best but if on a budget than a MF noodle mitt are decent enough.

For a drying towel try and get a high g/m² pile towel. Something like 'dry me crazy' on detailing shed is one of the best on the market.

Thanks Curran. I'm nearly out of the SRP so was thinking of trying out something new to see how it goes. I'll have to order some 845 and a few other bits off you shortly.

I would suggest the collinite 945

Good prep as above. Collinite after the clay/rinse.
You can polish first if you wish before applying 845 but it works best on bare paint.

Did you mean the 845 there? So you'd recommend using it instead of a polish? Any negative effects from using after a polishing? Thanks again.

Definitely use a polish. 845 is just a sealant to protect the hours of work you put in to making it clean. After claying wash the car, dry it and begin polishing. Once you're done clean the car down using IPA (CarPro Eraser is good). Spray it on and wipe with a MF towel panel by panel. Then you can apply 845 and it should stay for a good 6 months!

As above.
I was under the assumption you were on a budget and by polishing I was thinking SRP then 845.

Using a polish with fillers like 845 will drastically reduce the durability of 845.

My last gallon was Valet Pro PH neutral snow foam. :

Very thick foam
Good cleaning ability
Massive smell

Once that was gone I went on reviews and tried Bilt Hamber Auto Foam:

Nowhere near the thickness and clinging of the Valet pro foam

Nice smell
Not as much brownie points as the VP foam for shher cling and thickenss.

Will I continue to use Foam?
I am considering using a citrus pre wash for a while instead to satisfy my curiosity as to which is better.

ooo BH citrus didnt know they did that now. Have to get couple air bombs off you when I get a chance. Been itching for a chance on them but it taken years for somebody to get it in to Ireland since I first seen it on there home sight.

Curran now I see your getting in there anti corrosion wax's can I take you will/can get the lance trigger add ons for the dynax stuff.

Also how does the incredimitts stand up to use, just the lambswool jobs are falling apart after couple wash's. They seem to be bit weaker these days.
