Irish martial arts body opposes recognition of MMA

Documents obtained by RTÉ News show strong opposition to proposals to formally recognise, regulate, and fund Mixed Martial Arts fighting.

The Irish Martial Arts Commission, which has been asked to consider taking MMA under its umbrella, wrote to the International Olympic Committee in April of this year saying that MMA, in its current form, is not a sport, and like dog fighting did not deserve to be legitimised.

It said it agreed with reports describing MMA as "pornographic, sadistic and voyeuristic to its core".

I don't think it should be banned, maybe more regulated, if its banned sure it will just thrive underground.

I've always felt that traditional Martial Arts is as much about spiritual and personal development as it is about physical competition, whereas MMA is purely about physcial comabat, so in that respect I can understand their stance not to accept it.

That said, they have no right to say it should be banned.

They are entitled to voice their opinion and concerns tbf- especially as they were asked to regulate it

Totally - as I said, and they had every right to decline the assignmnet.

If they believe it should be, and they give salient reasons why it should, why shouldn't they be allowed proffer that opinion?

TBH for me anyway, I have no objection if two men(or women) choose to bate seven shades of excreta out of each other and others choose to pay to see it. Trying to polish it into something more "noble", mainly so you can get the mainstream big bucks sponsorship in the door and I think "eh no".

If this means I see less of that arrogant **** Conor Mcdickhead, it can only be a good thing. MMA really bastardizes all of the core principles of martial arts like discipline, self-defense and mutual respect. MMA has become a garish blood-sport for morons. Don't blame them.

How so? Most of the people that I have met that have trained in MMA have shown the above attributes. In fact the mutual respect aspect I have experienced far more from the MMA community than anywhere else I have personally experienced.

If the Irish Martial Arts Commission wants to draw a line between itself and MMA then the rest of us should probably do the same, no matter where you stand on the subject. MMA is marmite so best to just leave it be.

Professional MMA fighters lack discipline? Reaching the pinnacle of a sport would beg to differ.

Everyone I personally know who trains in MMA swaggers around threatening people and bragging about how much they can **** you up with just their elbow whilst pounding their tapout t-shirt covered chest.....

Or the culmination of literally every experience I've had with MMA sorts. I used to box for recreation and I had no issues with those lads. Every MMA guy I've ever met has been a brain-dead scumbag.

Been in and out of MMA in Ireland for a decade. Never encountered a single overtly aggressive asshole in all that time.

I don't believe that for 1 second. Not because it's MMA, but because of human nature. Even in Soccer or Rugby or literally any sport at all, if you've been involved in it for over a decade you'll encounter a plethora overly aggressive assholes.

Most of the people I have seen wear Tapout have never trained in MMA and were thugs before MMA became popular and remained thugs but now with Tapout tshirts.

It was the same before MMA became popular. Most of the people who were bragging they could knock you out by one karate kick to the head never actually trained in Karate but just watched a few movies.

I bet if you went to an MMA gym and trained with them your opinion would change.
