Welcome to the Mayo GAA discussion thread.

This is one of the most active forums on Boards.ie. As a result, discussion can get quite heated. But there are certain things posters must realise are simply not OK to post:

- Personal abuse of anyone be they other posters, players, managers, referees, pundits etc. Any personal abuse will result in an infraction or a ban.

- Rumours about players'/managers'/anyone's personal lives. This should be self explanatory. Apart from being a dickish thing to do, it can lead to legal trouble for Boards.

- Trolling. Again, self explanatory. Trolls will be banned for a long time.

- Accusations of trolling. Report a post if you suspect it to be trolling. Do not call a troll out on thread as this will be considered back seat modding.

- Speculation into the identity of another poster. This is a site-bannable offence.

This list is not exhaustive. Either myself or another mod may add to this as we see fit. Just because a certain behaviour isn't listed, doesn't mean you can't be banned for it.
The general Boards.ie rule of Don't be a Dick always applies.

If you feel a post breaks the rules, simply click the red triangle underneath the post in question to report the post and a mod will deal with it as they see fit.

Think yis are being too harsh lads. This team have a proven record of producing in the latter stages of the championship. I wouldn't be quick to discard that.

Also, Tyrone haven't answered any questions yet when it comes to playing the big boys. They mentally didn't have it last year against Kerry. They still have to prove thats changed.

5th quarter final in a row, going for a 5th semi final in a row, 5 Connacht titles in 6 years and in Division 1 for 19 years. Think that qualifies as a "big boy" you fool.

JOB DONE ! That's it . I have no worries that they will be switched on full!y next Saturday. Back where they want to be. Today was flat for everyone . It was just a game to get over and done with. End of story.
Hopefully Keegan's not injured and Diarmuid is back.
I thought Cillian looked MUCH fitter today but still oddly short of confidence . Midfield was better. and as much as I have been against it the extra games have helped the Mcloughlin/Higgins switch. Thought Higgins looked more comfortable today!
And a word for 2 stalwarts who have come to the fore.......Andy Moran first. He has given us a focal point and leadership in the forward line .
And Donie Vaughan ! He has taken a lot of unwarranted stick in my opinion the past few years. He kept his head down and has come back in and been excellent in my opinion . He makes brilliant energetic runs that we have lacked all year. Doesnt always gets the ball but makes space.
I think his "unorthodox " running style makes him a bit of an easy target for some "Championship " fans but I'm delighted to see him back doing his bit for the team. Even if he doesn't start he will provide a massive option off the bench.
And speaking of the bench........I think that's what will beat Tyrone for us !
And I believe we will win it

Tyrone didn't have forwards last year. Not did they seem to believe that they could open Kerry up so easily.

Mayo's second half today was worrying.

As someone else said here this evening, all well and good taking your foot off the gas, but you have to know when and how to out it back on. It's hard to know if WH weren't so wasteful would Mayo have been as lackadaisical.

I think you may have misconstrued him,he was implying Mayo were not one of the big boys.

I am afraid I think we will reach the end of the road next Saturday.I will as always be there to support the lads and keep the faith but the form guide is only pointing in one direction.Our second half performance was pretty shocking.

We were coasting at 2-10 to 0-4 and seemed to take the foot of the pedal for the remainder of the contest irrespective of the spurned goal chances and shots of the posts.The usual collective switching off.

Diarmuid O Connor was sorely missed,I can't understand why Tom Parsons failed to start and was introduced with a three minutes to go? Barry Moran and Conor O Shea made big impacts.

It was mentioned to me that the team are not worried about killing teams off whence the game is over as a contest.That sort of mentality worries me greatly.Today it damn near cost us the game.Too many key players off colour including Cillian O Connor,Aidan O Shea was pretty anonymous today.

A Mayo team of the past in it's full pomp and glory,I'd be confident of beating Tyrone.The current version,I'd be very pessimistic.We've a decent record against Tyrone,the lads are well capable of winning this contest but the question remains do they want it enough?

There is a big game left in Mayo yet. Even if we had lost today, it would be bitterly disappointing but we'd come back again next year and support our team. It's great to be still in it! COME ON MAYO!!!

I think he's handy. Thought Vaughan was very mobile and helped the attack better than Parsons has. It was good to see him get some time though, he's valuable. If everyone was fit I think SOS, B Moran and Parsons are the midfield, Vaughan into the half-forward line for me all imo being an outsider and all. That was a nice starting forward line today though, a bit of balance to it.
AOS wasn't very productive IMO. Great work on the turn over to set up his goal though.
I thought Keane looked shaky at 3 but he was marking one of the best.
Thought keegan was quiet too. It was a funny game. For 60 minutes I thought Mayo had another gear to go up, but for the last 10 minutes I thought they'd forgotten how to shift into it.
One question for me would be should you start Andy Moran or not. He was great in the first half imo strong, fast hands and mind, then faded out. Twenty minutes to go and it was crying out for an impact sub. Dillon didn't cut it for me , Andy gives a great lift and can make a goal and score a couple of points in the dying 10 minutes. He might be the Mayo Kevin McManamon.
I think I'd hold onto him for the last 20 minutes that's typically 26 minutes these days and plenty of time to get the most out if him and the momentum he brings .

I know Mayo didn't rock the GAA world today, but I'd expect that maybe that was Keegan and AOSs bad game out of the way. B Moran must be pushing to start and Andy looks set to continue his best form in a couple of years.

Didn't o'connor score 3 points from play? Thought yesterday was one of his better displays this year so perhaps a tad harsh to say he was off colour.

All this talk of getting their bad game out of them, taking the foot off the gas, a win is a win, being where they need to be etc etc is worrying.

Hopefully all the above is true, but it rarely is.

No problem with them going in as underdogs v Tyrone, they are the most over rated team in the country, not saying that there not good, but they have much to.prove yet.

Even though I did not see the game I listened to it and they said that Westmeath went man to man in the 2nd half.

So if Mayo struggled with man to man they can take some solace in the knowledge that Tyrone are possibly the last team that will go man to man with anyone.

One thing seligehgit you wont be 12 points up against Tyrone like that so I wouldn't worry about collectively switching off at all.

Children options were gone at 9 am when opened . Purchased adults seating only and poor enough locations though . Can't complain as it is looking like a sell out . Have we had quarter final sell outs before ?

Very worried after yesterdays display.They just did not play in the second half.
I am not sure did they think the game was over at half time and decided to take it hand. Rochford was very slow to make changes in my opinion. I would have SOS off as I felt he was not playing well and parsons in. His tackling is off as well. Dillon and freeman offered nothing when they came on. Pace is gone from Dillon as well.

On the positive, look we got the win and I would imagine it could be hard to get really worked up for Westmeath as they would have felt they were always going to win this. Vaughan/Moran played well as did Barrett when he came in. I would prefer Barrett in the corner with Higgins the other side.
They is no hiding from now on so we are gone if the same display is dished out. I would imagine they should improve a lot and we need to drive in the early ball.

Very hard to know what to make of yesterday, I don't understand this mentality of taking it easy when you're well in front, mayo should have won that game by 20 points yesterday, in the finish I was just relieved with the win, westmeath also had a fair few wides, a better side would have scored more of these and beaten us yesterday. Tyrone should be red hot favorites and rightly so.
I'm not a believer in this theory of taking it handy against the weaker teams and then just turning it on against the big teams, I suppose we'll know by this time next week.

I'd hold off on the negativity . We've been here before although not at such a later stage of the competition without a game plan .
The positives for me is that a lot of the players have been and showing good performances at patches . So we know it's there , if motivation is anything the hope is that next week will bring it out . The second positive is that we are scoring goals and reasonably high scores . I'm not going to touch on the obvious negatives . Positives so far

Diarmud ( almost all games)
Boyle ( all games )
McLaughlin ( best season since 2012)
Clarke ( excellent , thought the dead cert goal yesterday was brilliantly held up)
Higgins ( most games if not all. Wish he was a more scoring threat )
Regan ( Kildare game very good , might not start next week)
Cillian looks to be hitting the higher notes after yesterday .
Keegan ( good spells in most games, needs more of it)
Harrison was good yesterday
Andy Moran ( looking like a start and for 50 minutes)
Barry Moran ( good impact sub )

And we are getting parsons and Barrett back .

All is not bad at all.

Yeah his one and then the westmeath lad a few mins later probably both should have been but you could argue the they just pulled them back and they went down. Rather than bringing them to ground. Which is just as cynical to be honest.

Andy Moran revival as a starting player is the one major positive of the Rochford era so far. Though Vaughan played very well, Andy was man of the match by a distance for me. I think he must start because he sets the tone for the whole forward line. I don't think he faded in the second half just ball didn't go into him. I think the sweeper system is not working and is actually inhibiting the half back line particularly Keegan who is a shadow of himself this summer. If DOC is fit next week it's a 50 50 game and Mayo have big game experience in spades. Im delighted that they didn't win by 16 or 20 points last night because we've seen that movie before and it doesn't have a happy ending. The players know they have the ability but know they must improve and that's the best place an athlete can be heading into the sharp end of a season.

Andy can be handy as an impact sub and often lifts the team, but sometimes I feel he gets a bit overexcited when he comes on later and the game is in the melting pot. It's almost like he feels he has to come on and win it himself rather than just staying calm and offering an experienced helping hand. The first dublin semifinal last year was a perfect example of him coming on and getting carried away. I think I prefer him starting where he can offer that bit of experience early on rather than coming in and losing the head a bit.

Not worried here. They looked fit and able and imo, were told to relax for second half with the intention of all the subs coming on. Save yourselves for next week. Might have relaxed a bit too much and allowed some easy and painful errors that allowed Westmeath to get the upper hand, with a mad scramble at the end, fantastic. The match had everything, including me nearly on the way to the ambulance

I expect that the match next week will be taken a lot more seriously with no let up from the go. 3 O'Shea's warming up nicely (please put one of them in the backs) and with Donal back on form, the team coalescing very nicely with sharp accurate movement and passing, what more could you want than the performance shown in the first half.

Again cant wait.

Can't add too much to what was said. We're still here and for 15 minutes we were superb. Atmosphere was awful and maybe hard to get yourself playing in a graveyard.
Aos was poor so really should be under threat from his brother or moran. Keane destroyed at full bsck.
Pluses in Vaughan and conor o shea. Also Andy Moran.
Let's just wait and see. Kerry were as abject as we were so shows lot of so called big boys are off the pace.
