How would you fix RTE 2 ?

What should rte2 do to improve ratings ? Should they aim at a slightly older viewership ? I think Brendan o connors new chatshow would have been more suitable as an new flagship program for rte2. I also think they should reduce repeats, getting rid of muck like the republic of telly and also get rid of that shacking buttocks from their idents

They wont go for older as RTE1 is for these people so only way to go is more Australian tv show's. All good u.s. show's should be switched to RTE2 from TG4.

TG4 should reduce hours and have a budget cut and stop showing English speaking show's. Could even merge with RTE News Now.

Tv licence should be reduced.

People are still lying on trolleys in Hospitals and we spend taxpayers money on tv that private companies could cover.

RTÉjr is the way all their channels should be. A good bit of domestic programming and no ads. the licence fee would cover costs if they would pay their 'stars' appropriate amounts.

Reminds me of a front page report from last week's Sunday Times

Naughten will also bring proposals to government in September to increase the amount of licence fee funding paid by the Department of Social Protection to the national broadcaster, and to restore the full state subsidy to TG4, which would give back the station €9.24m in licence fee revenue.

Fixing RTÉ 2 would probably involve doing a number of other things at the same time at RTÉ
With financial resources becoming more scarce and with RTÉ having to be spread it's funds across more & more activities and services over the years, it seems highly questionable how TV channels like RTÉ Junior and RTÉ News Now can continue to exist in their present form as they are not permitted to carry any commercial advertising whatsoever in a similar way that many of the newer RTÉ Digital Only radio stations like RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, RTÉ Gold, RTÉ Pulse, RTÉ 2XM, RTÉ junior/Chill cannot carry commercial advertising either. And then you also have RTÉ One +1 on air nightly from 7:00pm-1:00am.

The Minister will be keenly aware that if he permits RTÉ to raise the TV Licence Fee, there will probably be a major public backlash following the Irish Water and Waste Charges controversies. If the Minister opts to allow RTÉ the ability to start carrying commercial advertising on those TV/Radio services currently not running ad breaks then he will have the independent commercial TV/Radio broadcasting sector complaining loudly about RTÉ having an even more unfair advantage with the TV Licence Fee and commercial advertising on more tv/radio channels than ever before.

I think there is probably only one thing that should be done:
Close RTÉ One+1 as most of the programmes are on RTÉ Player catch-up service or repeated on RTÉ TV anyway the same week
Close RTÉ junior - so much of the channel material is also still going out on RTÉ 2
Close RTÉ News Now - they cannot afford to provide a live credible 24/7 rolling news service

Once all this is done, you will then be strengthening the remaining core services and can start building better Irish indigenous/home produced programmes along with the re-introduction of news and current affairs back into RTÉ 2.

I also think they should fix the crisis at Radio 2FM by simply replacing the station altogether with an enhanced RTÉ Gold service on the same FM radio frequency. 2FM cannot survive and thrive in today's busy commercial independent radio marketplace and they have already had several revamps and attempts at targeting different core audiences but have continued to lose listeners for a hole host of reasons many of which they are unlikely to be able to address as the younger demographic have different habits to those who grew up in the 1980s/1990s. It's time to change direction completely and play to your strengths as they have access to a pool of DJs who could make something of a success if they built a unique nostalgia type service that has more prospect of growth with a live presenter lead RTÉ Gold rather than trying to grow a younger audience at 2FM which no longer seems relevant.

This will leave us with only RTE 1 & 2!!
It sounds like a trip back to the analogue days.

I would rather see a couple of TV commercial breaks on RTE NEWS NOW and RTE Junior to supplement them, it would be a shame to close them.

I don't want to see us closing channels, it's a step backwards, if this is the case, we may as well close RTE 1 & 2 at 11:30pm every night with the national anthem and open up at 3pm in the afternoon with live at 3 and Bosco, a step back to the 80s.

RTE 2 needs to lose the kids programmes - there is RTE Jr for them.

RTE 2 should be the Sport channel of choice - for Racing, Golf, GAA, etc. During the last week Galway racing was on RTE 1 because the kids programmes took precedence - due to Ministerial order. No Galway racing on Friday, Saturday or Sunday - why not?

RTE 2 could show some archive programming and some music programmes preferably live.

RTE 2 should get a firm identity - who are they aimed at?

RTE seem to have decided that if a sport starts on ONE it stays on ONE. GAA Championships being a case in fact.

Used to be the case kids programmes would be dropped during the summer for sport, when it could have aired on ONE when RTE programmes go on holiday. BASTARDS!

RTÉ are no longer the cash cow they were back when they enjoyed a monopoly as a single broadcaster in the state and they have never faced all this competition from so many other TV/Radio stations on multiple platforms as they have done in recent years while at the same time they provide so many services all against the background of a shrinking TV Licence Fee revenue and stiff competition on commercial advertising from both independent commercial broadcasters at home in addition foreign based operators. If they are to "fix" RTÉ 2, something has to give and I do not think that commercial advertising alone even if was to be granted permission (on channels like RTÉ News Now, RTÉ junior etc;) by the relevant Minister in the future would be sufficient for RTÉ to fix RTÉ 2 and other areas that have been in decline. They are examining the possibility of selling off some lands at their Montrose HQ campus in Donnybrook Dublin 4 and may eventually consider moving their entire operations away from Montrose because things have been getting tighter.

Across the pond, BBC News Channel have faced major cuts, itv closed down the itv News Channel in 2005 and recently sold UTV Ireland to Virgin Media/TV3 Group, Sky News Ireland shutdown and SKY News UK withdrew it weather forecast presentation team and are now said to be withdrawing all Business News from it's TV channel output although; they will continue to supply business stories via their website. RTÉ have limited resources just like the bigger operators in the UK so; it should focus on what it is good at in order to have more available resources to put into it's core services such as both RTÉ One and RTÉ 2 in TV land and apply a similar logic to it's resources in Radio land as the quality is falling across most (if not all) services and not just at RTÉ 2 and it requires a widespread review in order to consolidate their financial position for the future.

Meanwhile, Radio 2FM has been declining for quite some time and they should bite the bullet and replace it with RTÉ Gold on FM with a live presenter format as they have plenty of talent to pool from and I reckon they cannot regain the youth market in sufficient numbers at this stage what with so many programme schedule revamps and today's youth more inclined to listen to their favourite music tracks via other methods. Unless RTÉ does something drastic, it will become less and less relevant and I would rather we protect and grow decent quality programming rather than maintain all of the existing channels with little showing on channels like RTÉ News Now but mainly simulcasts of news bulletins/current affairs already going out on RTÉ One and then a lot of looped repeats in between while other channels like RTÉ One and RTÉ 2 show a lot of repeats of programmes like The Late Late Show long ago versus The Late Late Show from last season or "Reeling In The Years" yet again (It was great the 1st and maybe 2nd time but now it's exhausting) and other repeated shows broadcast during prime-time hours , low quality shows, same pool of guests and so called "Stars" or Celebrities" appearing on mediocre shows hosted by Tubridy/D'arcy & Company.

Stop buying in US shows only to be showing them first time at crazy times like 12am, 1am etc while you are repeating sheite like Republic Of Telly in the prime time slots the same evenings, talk about blowing money.

RTÉ Jr already is sharing space with the RTÉ One +1 channel

RTÉ wanted another channel but TV3 objected so the minister at the time didn't allow it.

I always regarded RTE2 TV (in its previous) incarnations as a wannabe mirror of what was happening with the kids, much like RTE Radio 2 was back in the day. On the pulse etc as it where. But neither have been for a long time, both radio and TV.

I think that's down to the people running the show being totally outside that demographic and/or out of touch and largely down to confusion over what demographic they are actually intended on serving.

So lets turn the question around.

How would yo?u re-program rte2, besides your view that Brendan O Connor is the saviour ?

You do realise that RTE2 have rights to a good lot of sports events that cover a lot of Irish interest. Where would you put that if RTE2 was closed down? RTE One? RTE Player only? You think the older viewers on RTE One will be happy with not seeing the Nine O'Clock News until a much later time on certain nights while instead seeing mega rich footballers kicking a football around the pitch.

One thing I would suggest for RTE One & RTE2 is to stop showing Euronews in the later hours of the night & only have it on NN. RTE2 could have similar signed RTE programmes like what is scheduled with RTE One copied onto RTE2 late at night to make sure it fills the schedule until when RTEjr begins at 7am the next day. If RTEjr is taken off RTE2; I would prefer it being turned to a seperate RTEjr/TRTE channel which would show RTEjr from 7am to 12pm & TRTE from 12p to 6pm factoring in the TwoTube programme in the schedule.
