Clare GAA discussion thread

Not true, he beat his man at least twice and got pulled down and another time came through at least 3 players but lost possesion when attempting a shot.
These are my memories i would have to rewatch it but he was one of our good guys yesterday.

Sad day for Clare. So many good players who are being straitjacketed. They looked lethargic except for Galvin who had a great pep in his step that enabled him to get away from his marker(s) time and again. Shane O'Donnell hadn't a hope as the sacrificial lamb. He has great talent, pace and hurling intelligence but to no avail in the current team shape.
It is abundantly clear that the issues lie with management because their role is to get the players onto the field in adequate shape for them to fulfil their potential. They have not done this once in championship hurling since 2013.
There are no excuses. You start with 15 and rise above any injury issues etc.

I was told Conor has some hormone imbalance and has lost weight due to it, only restarted training a couple of weeks ago so I doubt there would have been a chance of him playing this year.

Interesting you should say he fell out with McGrath, as it's said he fell out with Colin Ryan because he had the temerity to get married earlier this year.

We have the players, just not the manager, over the last 3 years Davy's record would make a Cork manager blush.

Don't agree with that. I thought Shane O'Donnell ran his heart out but he hadn't a hope with the system Clare were playing. To often he was isolated with very little support.

It's time for Davy to go now, it's not that he's not getting enough out of hte players, he's actually stopping them from playing, ffs it's an easy game, hit the ball long, beat your man and get a score.

Time and again a Clare player would look to play the ball in and there would be at most 2 Clare players inside the opposition 45. Waterford were even worse in the first game as at times they had no-one at all inside the 45. What kind of tactic is that?

The Galway backs mopped up ball after ball but it was made easy for them. Clare didn't need to play like that against Galway, when they finally threw the shackles off a small bit in the second half they nearly turned it around. But still they didn't really go for it completely and the goal they needed didn't look like happening at any stage.

They reminded me a bit of the Roscommon footballers, over-rehearsed and enslaved to a system that's to be adhered to at all times even if it's blatantly not working.

I'm going Sunday, haven't been at a Clare football game since the 90s - all hurling in my house but I reckon we'll take a day out and support them - bandwagon jumper and proud!

By appealling it, hopes are raisied so it would be a bit deflating if he was ruled out just before the game.
In order to win we need everything to go right, and O'Connor is a key man for us and midfield is one of the few areas I'd feel we're stronger than Kerry.

Actually tickets are reasonable at €30 and €5 for juvenile. TBH i'd prefer to drive to Dublin than Thurles too.

I seriously can't imagine the county board delegates allaying the current malaise to continue without some meetings/discussions/motions of confidence? ?

Yeah 92 v the Dubs was special, great game, some atmosphere that day, I was actually at the Munster Final that year too, jaysus twas unexpected.
A mate called to the house and asked me if I wanted to go, sure why not I said, first Clare football game for me!
Remember singing "who the **** is Jacko" from the terraces , he retired after that.

I reckon what'll happen is that Davy will go away and have "chats" with his family/county board/team, then he'll come out with an announcement about how he has another year on his contract and he doesn't back down and that following discussions with everyone it's clear everyone wants him to continue so that's exactly what he's going to do.

There is zero chance of change through the county board route. The players, and only the players, can bring about change here.

The rumours I'm hearing is that his father is very unhappy that he was on the sideline last weekend, there was serious reservations from the medical team on having him there and he was being closely monitored by a few people.

Truth of the matter is the only 1 that'll get Davy to f**k off is Davy.

And by the way, I've great time for Dalo, but he's had his go managing Clare, time for someone that wasn't involved in the 90s, I'd go for the under 21 management, can't do any worse than the last 2 years.

Who replaces him is far less important than the fact that he is replaced, for now. Simply because whoever it is, they will actually be held accountable for team performances. We don't have that at the moment.

I don't know, we have a very good crop of players that are coming to the peak of their careers, Tony Kelly is 23, Colin Ryan is 28 for example, we can't afford to lose 2 years on a caretaker manager.

For sure, there are some people I would not be excited about seeing in the role. But anything would be better than having it hammed down our throats that chronic & abject failure is actually success. And that our manager is a misunderstood genius, doing his best with a limited group of players in the face of suffocating expectations.

A bit harsh there. We owe a debt of gratitude to him imo for his contribution over the years both as a player and as manager. I certainly wouldn't be telling him to "f**k off". However i do believe a change is required as i can't see what he will bring to the team next year that's any different to the last 2 seasons. I have it on good authority that donal maloney cannot take on the senior panel as he quite simply does not have the time. After that then i suppose dalo is the logical nominee but personally i would be enquiring with the likes of liam sheedy or Anthony cunningham...it would renew supporters interest in the panel and hopefully bring some new ideas to this bunch of players

This season was always going to be about promotion from division 2 (1b whatever) and getting back to Croke Park. We achieved 1 and not the other, fair enough the national league was a nice perk but hurling is all about the championship.

Fair enough, I'm being a bit cranky today BUT I will say that Davy has gotten an awful lot out of Clare hurling down through the years, he was prone to mistakes and he also looked to lead a player revolt near the end of his playing career. Now, he's been in charge since 2012 and truth be told we've had 1 BRILLIANT year but outside of that we haven't done anything of note, ffs outside of the Laois game this year we didn't score 20 points in the Championship this year, that's not good enough.

Honestly this 'two losses in seventeen games' thing was the end for me. The most idiotic and insulting thing I have ever heard a Clare manager come out with. But entirely in tune with the narrative being woven. Every single interview is the same, he has a great record and that Clare should not expect success. Apparently that definition of success includes winning a single championship game of note in three seasons.

The power of repetition is amazing. Allied with simple stats it can do incredible things. Whereas in any other situation, his defenders would be hard pressed to make a case for why he should be retained, in this case fans are attacked as unreasonable for saying that he should leave. At this point I am not sure what would need to happen for continuation to be deemed unacceptable. On the face of it, I think we would need to be beaten by one of the teams that are just above Christy Ring level. Because we've been beaten by everyone else.

Daly got Clare to two semi-finals and a quarter-final in three years. With a squad that had a fraction of the talent available now. After 2006, there was no self-serving PR campaigns. He stepped down with his dignity intact, acknowledging that he had done as much as he could. Compare that to what we have now.

Daly had a good results, but he took over a team who were All Ireland Finalists in 2002 and had a bunch of players under 30. He was extremely unlucky to run into Cork and Kilkenny at the height of their powers but I can't remember any manager who was more successful when they went back for a second term.

By my reckoning since 2012 Clare have played 21 Championship games, we've won 10 games (2 against Laois), lost 9 and drew 2 games, that's a less than 50% win ratio. Take 2013 out of it, then we have a 8 loses, 4 wins and 1 draw record, for a supposed tier 1 team that's not good enough in my opinion.
