The GOP speaker posted a picture on Instagram captioned: 'I think this sets a record for the most number of interns in a single selfie.' But the photo has sparked outrage because the House hopefuls are overwhelmingly white. In fact, just three people of color can be seen in the entire picture of more than 100 interns. The photograph has been widely mocked online for its 'embarrassing' lack of diversity with commenters even comparing it to a Where's Waldo? puzzle." No wonder Bill was blown away
'Good lord! That is embarrassing- NO diversity !!!wow!'

If the interest isn't there in certain sections of society by all means promote it, but don't just pop in token minorities for the craic. For example as it is for the most part the lack of African Americans represented that is the issue, how many African Americans are actually applying for these internships and how many of them are suitable qualified (I suppose for an internship it would be how much more impressive are you than the competition)? Yes you can say that African Americans represent X percentage of the population but the reality is that African Americans are poorer and less educated on average than white Americans. This is a huge issue and should be addressed. Shoehorning in African Americans, or any other minority into White House internships doesn't help the majority of black Americans living in ghettos. And the reality which people seem to hate hearing is that at present it's more likely that a white person in the US is more qualified due to on average coming from families with higher incomes and having better education opportunities. Of course it all depends on the person but on average this will be the case. Now rather than gloss over the actual problems by saying 'hey look we have 30% black in all state jobs' why don't the US actually try to sort out the problems that result in black Americans being at such a disadvantage. Quotas create racial divisions and emphasise the fact that we are different and should be hired based on our ancestoral heritage rather than on us as an individual.

But...consider this hypothesis: hundred years ago, racism towards Blacks inexplicably disappeares overnight. And you are the president of the US, whose administration has effectively no Blacks above menial grades. Believing, as I'm sure you do, that Blacks are unequivocally fundamentally equal to Whites and any other race, would you still maintain your opposition to quotas? Would you still believe it "creates racial divisions"? (I actually chuckled as I quoted.) Would you not recognise that it serves a far greater purpose than tokenism?

Of course I believe that they are fundamentally equal to any other race, however if they are not above 'menial' grades they should not simply be hired to fulfill a quota. Why not try to sort out the 'menial' grades? Work from the bottom up. I do think there are times when racial quotas can be helpful when there is widespread institutional racism but it should be viewed as temporary and shouldn't be used to paper over the cracks that a large portion of African Americans are still at a huge disadvantage in life. Let's say there's more black interns in the White House because of quotas. How does this help the situation of the average black American growing up in poverty? Of course it will create racial division. The extent of the division is up for the debate.
