Moving to Sligo

Hi, I am relocating to Sligo from Waterford.

Looking for some advice.

1. Is there any places that list property apart from Daft and the other obvious ones.

2. Please recommend areas 10-20 mins drive from the town centre

3. Where should I avoid? I have read some negative stuff about Tubbercurry for example, is it really that bad?

I would advise as follows:

Take 2/3 days and visit Sligo and its environs. There's only a handful of streets in the town, look in the Auctioneers' windows, get a feel for the prices, locations, distances, walk around, drive around. Get an OS map (1:50,000), visit a 15/20 mile radius to start with. Nothing beats the evidence of your own eyes and gut feeling.

Plenty of properties for sale/rent within a relatively short commute time/distance. Consider renting for period before committing.

Then think it over and make up your own mind.

20 mins drive to town center takes you pretty much anywhere from Grange on the North , Riverstown east, Achonry , Ballymote , on the south , out as far as Dromore west on the Ballina Road, you have plenty of scope there, traffic on the morning is minimal depending on your start time, we get rush 15-20 mins in Sligo at 8:40 and that's about it.
My advice would be to rent somewhere for a while and have a good look at the different areas, you might find somewhere quiet like Riverstown suits you better than Strandhill or town.
You mentioned Tubber, prob more like 30mins from Sligo, the main problem there IMO would be thats its over developed with houses so rent and property are cheap as chips, it can get negative reviews but I go out in Tubber every now and again and never had any issues, also has an excellent 9 hole golf course in the town.

Have have had several pm's regarding Tubbercurry too, and everyone has been very positive about it. I'm there next week and going to look at a few areas.

As other people mentioned the best would be to visit Sligo and check personally. Little bit over one year ago I moved here from Dublin and before this I visited Sligo twice to check area.
In my opinion everything depends from your needs. Do you wish to have complete quiet or prefer socialising? Do you need shops, schools around? If you have a car you can even live approx 10-20km outside Sligo Town and you be able to get to center in 20min. Its really a small town

I was looking for a house on daft as it is probably the biggest site. The other one like myhome is worth to check as well

Personally being from County Sligo I wouldnt go to Tubber or Ballymote especially if you intend to work in North county sligo

Also forget about electrically heated appartments - Those units are extremely expensive to run on a wet night in November - stick with the oil.....

I'd recommend anywhere between Carraroe (more expensive!) and Ballisodare/Collooney if you're working south of the town. Avoid Coolaney. Wouldn't see any need to move out as far as Tubber, you'd get places for really not much more expensive closer to the town. Very little in Tubber, and not a very nice drive in and out of Sligo town if you're doing it every day.

Maybe somewhere like Calry if you'd prefer northside ... depends really what sort of house/apartment and what sort of area and facilities you're looking for.

Strandhill would probably be my own first choice, pricey though. But very convenient for Sligo town, and a lovely little village.

Just be prepared for the shops to be very poor. The retail parks are a disaster. After the novelty of a new town has worn off, say 1 month, if you have a car then there are a few places to visit for day trips which are nice, but you're a long way from anywhere good.

I lasted 6 months before the desperate shopping choices made me leave. I moved up to Donegal where the standard of living is about 50 times that of Sligo.

Carrick-on-Shannon isn't bad for shopping, and it's only maybe 40 minutes or less from Sligo. Enniskillen isn't a whole lot further away, great variety there.

I'd agree the shopping in Sligo town itself isn't fantastic, but that in itself wouldn't put me off living there to be honest!

COS might not be "bad" for shopping, but its hardly good. Actually, its not good, the main benefit is not having to endure that shameful atrocity of a Tesco that plagues Sligo. You get better Tescos in the third world!

Depends what kinda shopping you're after, as far as I remember they've a New Look there and a good few other high street outlets. I was on a girly shopping trip there last year, can't remember exactly what shops were there but it kept us entertained for a few hours anyways!

There's a good Lidl and Aldi in Sligo, and a decent Dunnes ... I rarely go near Tesco!

Honestly shopping wouldn't be a major consideration for many people when choosing where to live, in my opinion. So long as there are places within driving distance for occasional day-trips, if necessary.

Tubbercurry has a bad reputation that it doesn't deserve. I'm there more than 10 years as a blow in and it's a grand place. You could be closer to sligo in places like colooney or ballymote, but the big advantage to tubbercurry is how many large towns you're with 30 to 40 minutes of.

Sligo, Ballina, Boyle Charlestown, French Park all half an hour or less.

Castlebar, Carrick on Shannon, claremorris all 40 minutes.

It's proximity to knock is the best thing about it. 15 minutes door to door to the airport.

Nothing wrong with Tubbercurry itself if you're working there, it's just a nasty wee drive into Sligo if you're doing it everyday, in my opinion. Don't see why anyone would live there to work in Sligo, when there are similar places at similar prices with a much shorter and easier drive into work!

Yeah I don't disagree. I don't do the sligo run anymore but did it for years. If you're working around carraroe it's fine but town can be a nightmare for a 9am start.

When I moved it was more attractive because of house prices but that's no issue anymore. Like I said though it's a good base for people open to working in any of the other towns.

I just wondered why you would avoid Coolaney? I'm living here for 26 years and it's grand.
