German activist lied about sex assault by Arab men to avoid fueling racism

The national spokeswoman of Germany’s left-wing youth movement Solid has reportedly admitted that she lied to police about the ethnicity of three men who allegedly sexually assaulted her, because she was afraid of fueling racism against refugees.

Selin Goren, 24, told police in January that she was robbed by three men in Mannheim, where she works as a refugee activist, the Daily Mail reported.

Ms. Goren told officers that the men were a “mixed group” of foreigners and locals who were speaking German. After her initial interview, she returned to the police 12 hours later to tell them that she was sexually assaulted by the men who were of “Arab appearance” and speaking either Kurdish or Farsi.

She may be so traumatised by the whole incident that she reframed it in a way that made it easier to cope with, and stayed with that narrative until she'd stabilised enough to confront the facts.

People can behave in difficult to understand ways when they're acutely distressed.

Is it really easier to believe the victim of a sex assault of that magnitude is lying than it is to believe she's traumatised and distressed and mentally suffering to the extent that she does and says irrational things? Victims of those kinds of crimes aren't likely to be thinking things through coldly and logically when they've been put through hell.

The link is to show I'm not making it up. I'd rather not have to add links but that seems to be the burden of proof nowadays.

Until the polizei say otherwise, it is an alleged sexual assault. Sexual assault is an umbrella term, so we don't know what allegedly happened - could be something serious, could be something like an ass-grab or cat-calling

Can't speak for anyone else or any other allegation but when someones story changes and the reason for it changing sounds far fetched it usually indicates lies.

Think of it this way, say I went to the police about getting attacked. Not sexually just attacked. Now later I change my story because I was worried about racially fueling the fire but now I'm telling the truth... I wasn't before. Don't you think the guard in question won't think to himself/herself that I very well may be just making this whole thing up?

It's an absolutely infuriating, bewildering, frustrating thing when crimes are downplayed due to the community from which those who commit them hail... however saying she's insane - brings nothing to the table and best left to the professionals.

She's hair pullingly frustrating and possibly messed up after an assault (if it took place) but there's little to no evidence that she has actually lost her mind.
