Clare GAA discussion thread

Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

increadible scoreline in the end in a 35 point win , really feel sorry for laois and especially shamus plunket , they had really made progress over the last few years ,today is one to forget

nothing major to report from a clare point of view ,we were always expected to win this one , next week will however answer a lot of questions on where we really are and more important where the management will be

frustrating night in the end for laois saw them play with a man down for half the game , hopefully next year will be a repeat of 2014 for them

scores for us shane o'donnell opened the goal scoring inside the first 3 minutes , arron shanagher followed up with 3-1 to really lay down a marker for a start next week while podge got the last

I think there's a dilemma now for Davy and the management in the next round when Cunningham and McGrath come back from injury. SOD and Shanagher would have been the likely replacements before the game, but they did some of the highest scoring. Then again this game is virtually meaningless.
Next round we play a county with the chance to get our first proper championship win in 3 years. That round last year in Thurles against Cork was a bad memory, got soaked to the skin too. I'd like to play them again this year.

two things that worry me fr next week , firs the team selection and the need to get it right , the other is on far two many occasions under current management have we been eliminated at this stage

Yeah I'd agree. On the second point, I just feel Clare if we are going to do anything this year, we need just get one actually good performance so they can bring that going forward. Call it a baseline or something, so it sets the bar for training and brings a bit of focus and target to the camp. You see it with KK or even our year in 2013, the team put in one good performance and builds on it in the next round, getting momentum. If we just go out and get a mediocre win, I don't know, it would be good to win, but it still gives no idea where we are. We really need consistency now.

McGrath starts before O'Donnell for me every day. Shanagher brings a different element to the full forward line, strong and very good under a dropping ball. I think we are a lot more dangerous in front of goal with either himself or conlon in full forward.

think shanagher is a better option in the forwards then o'donnell for height and power alone, probably will be used as a impact sub next week though , not sure just how much i would fancy our chances against cork if we got them next week but if we are to have any say this year we need a game like this and need to set down a marker , no advancement beyond next week and serious calls of change will take place in fact management should do the Honorable thing , not sure what a game against wexford or limerick could do for us , both managers seem to be just moving deck chairs on the titanic at this stage and would be surprised if either tj or liam dunne will be intercounty managers come the start of next year

limeick next Saturday . most likely a double header with the cork Wexford game in Thurles. I would expect the football qualifier to be moved to Sunday to accommodate podge ( and support)

winnable game limerick not going as well at the moment .I would imagine it's last chance saloon for the losing management

Probably likely to be an edgey enough game Id say. It seems with beat Limerick on every second occasion in the championship so hopefully we win this one.
Is McGrath out for the month of July?

clare 1-25 - limerick 2-18 AET

good win for the intermediate's tonight in limerick , needed extra time in the end but pulled away in the end , as manager donal malony has now won munster titles with clare at every level from minor , u21 and intermediate ,the sooner he gets his chance at senior level the better
they will now meet either kilkenny or wexford in the all ireland final 4 weeks today, i expect the likes of ben o'gorman , oisin donnellon to put there hands up now between now and the end of the club championship to push for senior places next year

If we are to win on Sat, we would be hoping for a Tipp win against Waterford, or we would end up likely getting Tipp in QF and KK in SF. But yeah, not worth thinking about right now.

A good win last night for the intermediates. The shooting of both sides left a lot to be desired but the breeze may have caused wayward shooting from way out. The introduction of Gleeson and O'Gorman had a big impact. This is a good build up to the Waterford U21 match next week.

I think we should just win on Sat and what happens after that will be a bonus. We haven't won a meaningful championship game against any of the stronger counties in a few years so baby steps needed.

there is no doubting the fact that the route that avoids kilkenny and tipp is the hardest, as of now i wouldnt say no to either outcome , with the possibility of hurling in to august or exit from the championship saturday night is davey's biggest game since 2013

i think it gives us a great chance ahead of next wednesday night , that was a fairly strong limerick team we beat last night , and with the likes of david fitzgerld , bobby duggen and arron shanaghher to link up with the bulk of the intermediate team i would imagine we will go very close , hard place to go to though

I dont think there is any huge stars in the team, Shanagher and Fitzgearld could be, but there are some very good stickmen, especially the half back line in McCarthy, McGuane and O'Gorman. It will mean again like always under Molony, they will try to work it out of the backs. It will be a very tough game against Waterford, because they wont be complacent this year.
I think if we get a good game from Shanagher we will be in with a good chance, although Galvin is a massive loss, he hit 6 from play last year.

3 day turn around is very unfair on the waterford players involved , we would'nt have been as badly affected had it been us in the munster final ,

got great time for the likes of shane gleason, ben o'gorman and davy conory in midfield , aidan mcguane has been excellent for kilmaly in the club championship both this year and last , i still regard this as a strong team , just not as strong as possibly our best ever underage set up previous ,

moloney has done a super job getting certain lads to box above there weight too look at last years munster final and how close we came , probably would have won another u21 all ireland had we got over that obstacle,

Yeah Molonys prep work is excellent, probably the biggest difference between him and Davy, we know our u21 team will be sharp whether we win or lose, contrary to the seniors where we know our team will annually under perform in the first round.

intresting to see how shanagher and shane get on up front with mcgrath out , david mc is a huge player where ever he plays but would prefer to see him further back the field

Kelly is injured.
Kelly & Touhy have been Clare keepers the last few years and to be honest neither have set the world alight. Both are very poor under the high ball -and are prown to some bad howlers. They are reasonable shot stoppers and puck outs are not too bad.

Kelly can be very petulant which was evident the last day against Waterford on 2 occasions when he should have got a yellow card for both.
1. At half time Kelly had ball for puckout and referee signalled to him for the ball as he was going to blow for half time, with Kelly then firing a bit of a rasper of a shot in the referees direction. On TV you can clearly see the referee giving out to him all the way into the dressing room.
2. In 2nd half Waterford scored a monster point from their own half and as Kelly ran behind the goals to retrieve the ball he picked up the white flag and threw it away just as the umpire was reaching for it in order to signal a point was being scored.
He is far too old & experienced for this sort of behaviour and it is not acceptable. If you treat the officials in this manner then you are making it easy to give any 50/50 calls against you.

Fahy has been good for under 21s lately and has a chance now to make the no. 1 jersey his own.
