I was thinking that too before we scored. Our first touch and control of the ball was appalling by comparison with Italy. We completely dominated possession, but created very few clearcut chances. Few mitigating factors though - we were denied a stonewall penalty, the ref allowed the Italians to beat Shane Long up all game with no sign of a yellow card, and Italian teams make a virtue of defending and are masters of the art of looking sh1te yet keeping teams scoreless. We certainly weren't that good, but we weren't that bad either...

Soccer players often get stick from rugby fans about being cheating prima donnas, but there's a few that pretty much get universal respect. Buffon is one of them - straight over to O'Neill/Keane tonight after the final whistle. Classy individual.

I've turned off soccer a fair bit in the last decade or so, but it's great to see the fans who have stuck with it get rewarded with nights like tonight.

I’m ready to play. I feel like the advice I’ve sought out over the past 10 days has put my mind at ease and makes me more comfortable going down there knowing that, even if I do contract Zika, it’s not the end of the world.

The politicising of the whole thing was shambolic too. Having a reason not to play and alienate people is fine imo.

The Olympics were probably tainted in Rory's mind because of all the s*** he got around it. We just have to take his word for it that the Zika virus is sole reason he has pulled out but it is easy to be cynical on this.

Anyway as said Golf has no place at the Olympics. Nor does Tennis or Football, but then at least the Football is nominally U23.
