Should all religion be banned?

Do you think it's good for the mental health country that we have thousands of people attending religious ceremonies every week, talking to someone that doesn't exist and basing their morals on ancient scripture written centuries before them?

I know religion is a comfort for some people but it's seems bizarre that we allow it to be still significantly involved in modern society. I don't think the comfort it brings to people outweighs the negative cost and drastic burden it has on society.

Religion divides people more than it brings people together and, as such, I think it should be banned. What say ye?

Yes, it's all for the good of the proletariat. They're too stupid to be trusted with deciding upon/thinking about things themselves. The State will step in and guide their fragile minds (strict penalties for deviation from State approved thoughts).

Ban it? Nah, prohibition doesn't work. I would, however, be in favour of:

Removing religion entirely from our health, education and justice systems.
Taxing religious orders as the businesses they are.
Removing all traces of it from the State Broadcaster: if a religious order wants media time, let them pay for their own advertising.
Removing the right of religious orders to carry out legal marriages: if people want a blessing or ceremony of some sort that's fine but no religion should be acting on behalf of the state.
Prosecuting anyone found guilty of the genital mutilation of children as the monsters they are.
Banning religious orders from lobbying government officials.

Once shorn of it's historic privilges, I believe religion would die out even faster than it currently is.

Remove tax exempt status for religions, if a faith school receives a cert in state funding they shouldn't be allowed discriminate against unbaptised kids etc.

I think a world without religion would be a better more rational place but the way to achieve that is not to ban it its to keep endeavoring to prove the tenants of religion to be false. Religion has already lost its relevance in most of Asia , western Europe and North america ( with the obvious exception of the american Bible Belt) In time Islam will come to be recognized as an oppressive load of nonsense the same as Christianity was in Europe it will take time and for the governments of the Middle East and Africa to be properly challenge by the international community.

You'll find most atheists are reasonable and wouldn't want religion banned. Maybe you're getting confused with the desire to see religious influence removed from public policy.

No not religion full stop. Organised religion maybe, has far too much power in this world. I think meditation, reflection and thought of after life and a god watching over is very beneficial to a lot of people's live though.

I think religion and God are two totally different things not to be confused. IMO atisiam is a type of religion.

Tax all religious organisations like any other money making business. Also take all religion away from the schools. If parents are serious about their child being religious then go to a Sunday school. It is poisonous brainwashing.

I completely agree with you, I just don't agree with the idea of banning any kind of lampooning/comedy/mockery/thought as it's a step in the wrong direction.

I'm an atheist myself and don't 'carry on' like you've suggested. I have however come across viewpoints which could be seen as 'mockery' of atheism (yours above for example, comparing it to Islamophobic posts) - I'd never in a million years want to shut you down for it, say it as much as you want - I will do what I always do in such instances and just counter with well thought out retorts (okay maybe not this time as I'm about to run out the door!

I agree with most of the posts I've read over on the thread so far - I want to see it removed from schools and, well, anything state-run. The State should be for all its citizens, not just the Catholic ones. I do not agree with the indoctrination of children, nor do I agree with the religious emphasis put in to teacher training courses. And once your religion starts conflicting with the laws of the State (kill homosexuals, chop bits off children), the laws of the State absolutely come first, second and last.

Schools should not be faith-based, and really should not be allowed to discriminate on the faith of the children they take in. I know this is a hugely complex situation, given who runs the schools and often owns the buildings/land or has the deeds based on x,y and z restrictions, but this does have to change. It's slowly changing, but while it is in flux as it is now, children don't get an education very easily. Let faith-based schooling be restricted to after-school or Sunday School.

If religion must be taught in schools, it should be taught impersonally. "Religion and Culture", perhaps, teach children about beliefs around the world, along with the cultures that it helps to shape and be shaped by. That would be more useful to them than indoctrination into one specific religion (be it Catholicism, Sunni/Shi'ite/whatever Islam, Judaism in its various forms, etcetera).
And don't even get me started on schools teaching religious interpretations over verifiable facts such as evolution!

Religion should be a private and personal thing and a decision that people come to themselves as and if they wish. Wearing outward signs of their religion is also a personal choice, be it a rosary or a hijab, although again, if the school requires a uniform, then that's how it is. If it demands no jewellery, then that comes before wearing a crucifix too. I feel no need to slag off religious people, their faith is important to them, and to make fun of it seems just plain rude.

Also, I'm on the A+A forum, so I do apologise if my post isn't fapworthy. But relatively few of us are militant, just don't like militant Christians demanding their ways to be everyone's ways.

If there was no religion, people like this (read "Americans") would end up either committing suicide due to depression, or go on a mad murderous rampage because they know there are no repercussions after death.

Religion can be used for good or evil, but then so can science and I don't think one would do a poll 'should science be banned?'.

In China they banned the Roman Catholic church, but since you can't stop religion, they made set up an alternative Catholic church which has the Chinese state as the head of the church and they did this with other faiths too. Estimates of 5 to 6 million Chinese belong to the illegal Catholic church.

The Soviets cracked down on the Russian Orthodox church as they tried to remove religion from society.
The Khmer Rouge killed millions of Buddhists, Christians and Muslims in Cambodia in a bid to rid the country of religion.

Any society that had rulers that tried to ban religion, ended up with lots of death and eventually accepting religion in some form, as banning religion turns out be very destructive.

Well, they don't though, do they? I guess if you are not one of the following class of person:

Non-catholic parent of a child trying find a non-catholic school for that child;
A woman pregnant by rape that wants to not be pregnant anymore;
A woman pregnant with an embryo with a fatal foetal abnormality that wants to not be pregnant anymore;
A pregnant woman with cancer that wants treatment for that cancer

then you can probably argue that no penises (I presume you mean metaphorical penises?) are being shoved down your throat, and good for you. I am glad you are all right.

Banning it would only make it stronger, religion thrives in perceived persecution.

I take away some of it's concessions though, they shouldn't be able to make unsubstantiated claims just as other advertisers can't make unsubstantiated claims about their products. They shouldn't be able to make sweeping generalisations saying that just believing in god will make everything better. Or that praying will get you the things that you want.

But other than that we're probably stuck with religion forever, I think it will evolve with us and may become more about maintaining a moral identity and way of life that's beneficial to everyone.

I don't see it as a bad thing, it has been one of the most important and influential inventions humanity has ever came up with. It was part of a fantastic realization that there is a system to everything we see, that all life is interconnected and that there's more to life than survival.

It was basically science beta. It served us well in our ignorance but we've outgrown it now.
