He has to be one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known, not just a stuffed suit like his wooden American counterpart. His steadfast resolve in the face of a proxy war being waged in Ukraine has to be admired, a war that would never have happened if billions weren't poured into Ukraine to kickstart a coup.

Like him or loathe him there is no doubt that Vladimir Putin is a very shrewd operator who is consistently one step ahead of the game.

What would be the motive for the Russian state to actively encourage and support football hooligans abroad? What purpose would that serve?

They're in Syria to defend Assad's government and protect their interests. I never understood the whole idea that they were just there to fight ISIS. They're there to fight everyone threatening to overthrow the current regime.
To that end they've halted the advances made by not just IS, but all other """moderate""" groups attacking them and regularly "checked in" with aircraft flying over Syrian airspace.

But the Kremlin must be really disappointed that their appointed football thugs didn't overthrow the government of France.

These street toughs were trained and prepared by Moscow and they failed so miserably in their mission. I mean a few were banged up by the gendarmes but no polonium was found on any of them.
