I was in Helvick head at the weekend, trying and failing to catch a few fish. Strolled to the pub and on the way back I spotted a drum of gas sitting on the rocks. The exact same shape as the yellow Calor ones that have been a staple of culchie life since the year dot, except it was blue. I picked it up because you can usually get a few quid for returning these, then I saw the logo of this crowd on the side, based in Jersey/Guernsey.

So this must have drifted over from there or fallen off some fella's yacht. Another day I spotted a badly damaged mug from the USS Dwight Eisenhower

Anyone here found anything interesting washed up? A lump of €200k whale puke perhaps?

I hope you did not transport this by car because of the risk of corrosion causing the gas to leak and cause a fire or explosion after exposure to sea and violent wave action for an unknown length of time. I certainly would not store it indoors or in a confined space until checked out by a gas heater expert.

I remember seeing a film about some west of ireland islanders coming across a naval mine washed up on a beach near their home. The hapless islanders weren't aware of the devices deadly intent and someone hit one of the protruding horns with a hammer, detonating the device among a crowd of onlookers with deadly and tragic results.

I don't know if the film scene was based on factual historical events.

I left it there in case you're tempted to go back and find the severity of the resulting explosion yourself. You'll be hard pushed to get it to explode though as it was empty and in remarkably good condition.

Speaking of corroded drums of gas, there is a shed up in the middle of Tory Island that is full of them, most of them rusted through completely with big sections missing. I wonder would the local shop take those in exchange for a new one.

"wreck" as it is called has always washed up on our coasts.I have found anything from a bouy from Boston to a coconut from the Carribbean.Used to live on an offshore island and used to get up early to walk the strands.Plenty of driftwood to burn in the winter,you would gather your stack and leave it on the top of the strand to dry and nobody would touch it!Respect amongst wreckers!

About 30 years ago, Brother and myself Found a rocket shaped object about a metre long and about 6 inches diameter with "please contact police if found" stamped on the side. We hauled it back to the house, mother nearly had a heart attack and called the guards. They came around fairly pronto with lights flashing.

We were too young at the time to appreciate the danger. I'd say it was a flare off a ship.

Persons from Dublin, Ohio, Dublin Delaware, and Dublin California are considered honerary Dubs. This status is to be considered somewhat akin to an honerary doctorate, though. It'd be very bad form to put it on one's CV. At heart, they're still culchies.

We used to find quite a few of those years ago. The Gardai were called and now and again they'd arrive with the army to defuse them. Always great for a bit of excitement when you're a kid

Way back when, before the sewerage treatment plant was built off Salthill in Galway, a fella I know of jumped from the Blackrock Diving Board. When he came up, there was sh1t in his hair. Actual human sh1t.

I would like to visit these places. I assume I'd be fully entitled to lord it up a bit, help myself to some food & lodgings, maybe have the first shot of any beautiful brides on their wedding night, that kind of thing, on account of being a genuine true blue Dub. Obviously id wear a Dublin jersey to distinguish myself from the riff raff.:D

I once found a long length of strong rope on a beach in Donegal around 15 years ago, still have it too. I'd say it came from a trawler offshore somewhere.

Mate of mine was in his shower ~ having a shower, as it happens. He then reached for a nearby towel and started vigorously rubbing his head. Only to then find the towel was covered in schit! :eek:

I should point out that he lived completely alone at that time. No one else in the house. And I didn't do it!

Don't think he's ever worked that one out. Damned if I can either.

Ropes are easy to find. Got one here in cork not too long ago. Covered in seaweed but a grand rope beneath.
