Learn a decent programming language so u can write databases and other useful things. Then make sites for friends/neighbours/relatives, then sites for THEIR friends etc.

Go the hard but short route and that is learn a decent language like "C". If you can grasp that anything on the web would be a breeze and you can fall back on it when things are hard in the web industry (like now).

If you're talking about the design end of things (as opposed to scripting and programming), get yourself a good portfolio together. No one's gonna hire a designer without one... Send URLs along with your CV to a load of companies who may be hiring... wait and see who likes your work.

Having just reviewed 40 odd CV's, I can tell you that what is of absoulte importance is having a portfolio.

All well and good you say, but what if you are just getting started? The first thing is to design a web site for yourself. I am not going to give someone work if they can't or won't design a web page for themself.

Secondly do one for free or nearly free to get started. There is bound to be a local charity / school/ business that you could lend your blossoming talent to.
