Thanks...I'll get the blower out in the garden to scare the clouds...

Until then... "Irish stargazers will be able to view a rare 'super wolf blood moon' on Monday"

    Weather looking nice and clear

"It will turn very cold on Sunday night under clear skies and just light variable breezes. Lowest temperatures will fall to between zero and minus 4 degrees with a widespread sharp frost."

Any idea where in the sky the moon will be, high in the sky or lower down, and what direction?

The moon will be high enough in the sky when the eclipse starts. it will be low in the west at the end of the eclipse.

Most of the weather sites I checked are showing a band of thick cloud covering a lot of Ireland during the eclipse.

Checked Met.ie for where I am, "partly cloudy" for most of it, so might be lucky. Better wrap up though, -1C forecast!

On my phone I have the weather app Dark Sky which I find particularly good. It even gives a percentage of cloud cover for each hour. Unfortunately for me its 51 percent cloud cover at 2am rising to 83 percent cloud cover by 6am for where I am.

Looks like weather is not playing ball tonight lads :(

Cloud covering most of the country late on. Lovely and clear now though

Hoping my weather app is right as it's downgrading the cloud cover as it's getting closer. Now only 28% cloud cover at 3am so here's hoping.

Cold and dry tonight, with clear intervals. Lows of minus 2 to plus 1 degrees Celsius with a widespread sharp frost forming and the risk of icy patches. Light variable breezes.

Leinster forecast from ME, I'll take that. Fortunately it's a fairly long event!

What time does it begin at in Ireland?

What time does it begin at in Ireland?

Its not like a solar eclipse, where the timing is dependant on your location.

All times UTC/GMT morning of January 21st .....

    Start of pemumbral stage: 02:34
Moon enters umbra (start of partial phase): 03:33
Moon fully eclipsed (all of the Moon inside Earth's umbral shadow): 04:40
Moons begins to exit umbra (end of total phase) 05:43
    Moon exits umbra: 06:51
    End of penumbral stage: 07:49

The penumbral stages are of no significance, the eclipse effectively lasts from 3:33 to 06:51 with the moon totally eclipsed from 04:40 to 05:43

No surprise, that the weather won't play ball.

Have now decided to sell my scope Celestron CPC9.25 and a set of 2" Eyepieces now for sale. PM for photos and details.

If you were to get out of bed when's it worth it...still a perfectly clear night out there.
I expect junior to get into bed around 5 and kick me in the kidneys, might drag him out to see it if he does.

cloudy here in Galway now!

High clouds here in Letterkenny. Moon visible but hazy. Sat24.com shows thickening cloud from west on thermal satellite image. Doesn’t look too good for the west coast

I am going to try a timelapse vid of this, I'll post if it works, or if it doesn't I'll hide in shame.. ipad balanced between the window sill and a candle at the mo...

This is the moon before eclipse. As you can see, it's misty. It could be better but not too bad, yet.

Really getting cloudy now from the west, hopefully just a small bunch of clouds passing by.

you can make out that the moon is partially eclipsed through the clouds in Galway but can't see any detail to be able to appreciate it? anyone on the east of the country getting good views?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

Can see the eclipse nearly covering the moon, but very hazy and not much clarity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭Signore Fancy Pants

    In Dublin here.

The eclipse is at about 3/4 now, clearish with no real cloud cover. I tried taking a photo but its brutal.

    I also saw a fox....end transmission.

A few I've captured so far, first go at photographing a lunar eclipse and it's harder than I expected!

Typical. Weather was slightly hazy for the partial with fairly average detail available but as it got closer to totality the visibility just got worse and worse. Can't see it at all now. So technically I saw it but it's like an own goal, do you really want to claim it.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 10,878 Mod ✭✭✭✭PauloMN

Time for a cuppa I think, can't see a thing here at the moment. Even the slightest mist is enough to kill any view of the fully eclipsed moon, as I'm not in the darkest area.

Lovely clear sky when i went to bed.. setthe alarm and now cant see a thing in Dublin!! ARGH!!

It's totally blocked out here with haze

I'm on the east coast and it's very cloudy and misty unfortunately. video link below. Always either cloud or mist here on the coast. My camera is not great though.

Not much to see in Kilbeggan. Haze is making visibility poor. Frosty night I had hoped it would drive moisture from air. But I saw a fox

Got a decent view in Galway about 10-15 minutes ago, but no more than that. The western sky is just too hazy!

    in maynoothh kildare.

seemed to happen earlier than i expected time wise.

Good view coming out. Hazy but still nice. Got a few pics with the iPhone through my good set of binoculars. I have to say the pics are still awful :)

A few of on the way out... bit hazy and cloudy at times which was a shame. Really couldn't see the red hue at all due to the haze at full eclipse. Worth getting up for all the same!

Went through all my shots from earlier, thought I hadn't got one with the "blood" in it, but thankfully I just about did:

Saw a pretty amazing sight at 645am for 15 mins while out for an early morning run with my running partner. We saw a a perfectly symmetrical line running through the top half of the moon and into the sky. it lasted about 15 mins while we headed west. If i could have a guess it was like looking at the shadow of the outline of the earth (however that prob impossible) Louth weather on Facebook has commented it was a 22 degree halo but did not look like any of the halo images i have googled on line. How and ever it was pretty spectacular and something you dont see everyday.

Nice one...beautiful look before midnight, crips bright, back of the house looked like in a bad autumn day light.

However, after 5am,clouds and haze and just not enough willing to stay out in the chilli cold.

Sadly lost focus between shots and was impossible to get it back due to haze and equipment used (Skywatcher ST80 + Canon 1100D on Tripod)

I shall retreat in shame... it failed miserably. :o

After I set it, it refocused on the window glass so all I got was a blur...

I did set an alarm and actually see it tho, was beautiful.

Taken from earlier in the night. Couldn't stay up for the eclipse itself.

I wonder was it Earth's shadow you did genuinely see? It could have been an example of the Moon immersed in our shadow projected onto Earth's upper atmosphere, like what you get when the Belt of Venus is visible. Examples are https://www.atoptics.co.uk/fz584.htm and https://www.atoptics.co.uk/fza60.htm while there's another explanation plus images at https://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/earshad.htm and https://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/eshad1.htm

You could be right . Although the images above not the same as it was completely dark . Time was 640... lasted till about 655. Moon was very bright as eclipse was just over and lower . Pity no photos . But someone else had to have seen it

The time given ties in exactly with the Earths Penumbra moving down across the face of the moon from our perspective.
    www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2019-january-21 shows this very well
