iOS update & can't get verification code

Must be a common thing but couldn't find easy answer online. Wife updated iOS on her phone but its asking for the verification code that was sent to her other device - that's a dead iPad. Any way to stop the message ?

Log in to the iCloud account associated with the dead iPad?

Should be possible to click on "Didn't get a code" and change it to text to the phone number of the device.
