Most domain companies these days will offer a small amount of free hosting, or else very cheap. Check blacknight, I just transferred all my domains to them.

You can't discuss individual hosting services on this forum, it's against the charter.

Your domain and hosting are (or can be) separate. You can buy the domain directly from wordpress.com ($18 a year), and then have free hosting there, or you can purchase a domain and hosting from a webhost, which means you'll have to install wordpress yourself (or they might provide a one-click install, depends on the host).

It depends on what you want. If, as you posted above, it's just for learning, the cheapest and best method is installing xampp on your own machine, and install wordpress on that. It won't be available to the internet, but you'll have the greatest amount of control, and it's the best learning exercise you'll get

i tryed xxamp before and it was just problem after problem, trying to sort out different ports etc, so i just gave up on that method, i was trying serverpress.com similar to xammp, but trying to install it port 80 error came up and i just left it because i aint going through all that again.

i do want to learn about it, but i just be happier having my own domain etc,

Then the easiest method is buying your domain and hosting together, preferably off someone with a one-click install script for wordpress. However, you can't ask for recommendations on which host to go with here

These statements are contradictory. Part of learning is figuring out the issues.

To get xxamp working there's a decent chance all you needed to do was turn off Skype (which uses port 80).

    How about installing VirtualBox,
Then download a Turnkey Wordpress appliance from here, download the ISO, I know there is a VM one.

Create a new VM, name it, example 'Wordpress', then Operating System = Linux and Version = Ubuntu then allocate what you can afford in RAM, ie accept the defaults, it doesn't need much RAM.

Then create a new virtual disk, accept the default, VDI.
And then you are given an option of creating either a 'Dynamically allocated or
Fixed size', its a matter of preference, I would go Fixed size, as it will be given its own slice of hard drive space so it will perform better whilst the former is quicker in the creation phase it will take less space on your HD, at a cost to performance.

Choose the default of 8GB, though a lot less would suffice and then its created.

Now go to settings, storage, and click on the IDE controller and on the right you will see your virtual CD/DVD drive, load the ISO you downloaded here. (remembering to remove it when the appliance is installed)
And finally in settings go to network, where your virtual nic should be set to NAT, lets change this to bridge so it will get it's own IP address from your router on your network.

Start it up in Virtual box, and then you have a linux word press installation.
It will display the IP address associated once loaded.
You will have full permissions to do what you want with it.
It might help you with your development of Wordpress.

You can purchase a domain from wordpress.com and also server space. That way you can have mysite.com as opposed to mysite.wordpress.com for X amout per year. The problem is that you can't install anywhere near as many themes or plug-ins and you are limited to whatever their server specs are.
