I mean... WTF! How the hell do they manage with 27 runner handicaps at Ascot like the International on Saturday. I know the voice but I don't know the name but on ATR the commentator never put a word wrong. I've watched it a couple of times and you swear the fella had seen the race twelvty times. I don't think commentators get enough credit when they do something like that. or just a really good one when there aren't 27 bullets to catch.

Totally agree. The amount of work they put into for research in big field races must be unreal. Plus large fields are usually around 6f so there is no time to look at notes.

On the other hand they could be commentating jibberish as they know people watching are usually only looking for their own horse :pac:

Richard Hoiles is your man, brilliant commentator. I remember Jim McGrath doing a commentary at Ascot and he completely missed the winner cruising through and who was pulling away when he still managed to miss him and feck up the call.

There was a also a youngster a couple of years ago doing the commentary of the races that were on earlier than the RTE coverage had started at Leopardstown and they were some of the worst calls i've ever heard and haven't heard from him since. Also Alan Thompson was a terrible commentator calling things as if they close when there'd be 10 lentghs between the first two with 10 yards to go! He also has his great quip 'and here he comes on the favourite' even though there nearly pulled up out the back!!!

Tough job Hoiles is one of the best
