FIRST SATELLITE CONTENT CONTRACTS SIGNED TODAY BY THE BCI WITH RTE

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has announced today (Tuesday, 16th April 2002) the signing of satellite content contracts with RTÉ. These are the first contracts to be finalised by the Commission under the Broadcasting Act 2001. RTÉ submitted an application for the contracts in February last.

The conclusion of the contracts will facilitate the carriage of the RTÉ group of services, both radio and television, on the Sky (. "" The programmes broadcast on all services will exactly mirror those broadcast terrestrially. "")

Digital platform in IrelandSpeaking at the signing of the contract today, Conor J. Maguire, BCI Chairperson said, ‘We are delighted to have been able to conclude contract negotiations with RTÉ in an expedient manner thereby facilitating the carriage of their services on the Sky Digital platform in the very near future. We look forward to concluding a contract with TV3 in respect of their service within the next week.’

‘This is one of the many new areas of responsibility assigned to the Commission under the Broadcasting Act 2001. We are currently considering the framework and procedures for the licensing of new television services. It is envisaged that a draft outline of policy in this area will be completed over the next couple of months’, Conor J. Maguire concluded.

As stated elsewhere it doesn't matter what kind of contract RTE have signed with anyone, if they don't own the rights to programmes/events , they can't show them. Simple as that.

I know it is a question of rights, but surely RTE could argue that they are using the latest in encryption technology (i.e. Sky Digital) and in doing so are restricting their broadcast. You cannot account for a very small percentage of viewers that have taken extraordinary steps to circumvent the system. It is simply not fair to the other viewers.

I don't see the BBC having to restrict their coverage. What do other think - would the BBC have more 'illegal' viewers than RTE. You betcha.

BCI need to do something here, this is mad.

Agree 100% with Ghengis...

Rights agreements exist for every single non-RTE program they show. So why should one program be blocked and not another? Especially considering that there is no official or legal(?) way to view the programs in another country.

Actually is it technically illegal to use an Irish Sky card in the UK and vice versa? It must be a breach of contract?

I could be a while as i am in the last week of my exams. With 2 hards ones to come monday and tuesday and one piss easy one friday.

this is just great. are RTÉ in the game of punishing sports fans or something. i checked the EPG to see what time they were starting coverage for the France game and "no listings available" was staring me right back in the face. RTÉ have lost another viewer for the World Cup. i'll watch on BBC and ITV

It really depends if the rights to the programmes are held by other broadcasters already, SKY and the BBC were broadcasting via Sat to Ireland before RTE.....

Sky don't have World Cup rights. the BBC and RTÉ both show things like Eastenders and Neighbours with no difficulty via satellite. how would the World Cup change this, plus the BBC don't have live rights to all World Cup games

No idea, I was only speculating ! After all the current problems are a direct result of others owning the rights for Sat and RTE not, so unless they have paid to show the games on Sat in Ireland, then they won't be able to.

I obtained this info offthe epg. you can search a week ahead. I also rang up rte and they told me they were showing it on sky. But the epg. suggests otherwise. i'll keep ye posted if i hears anything.

I think you will find that RTE only bought the *terrestrial* rights for the World Cup in Ireland, that is why it won't be on RTE satellite.

There is no such thing as *terrestrial* rights when buying broadcast material.
There is only two criteria that determine the price of broadcast material.
1: The particular territory, and
2: The number of times the item is broadcast in that territory.

I have done a bit of checking and the following times show up no listings. The programmes that should be on are beside them.I got the program information from digiguide.

Friday 31st May 11.30am-14.50pm World Cup Live
Friday 31st May 19.00pm-20.05pm Today at the World Cup.

Its not looking good and the BBC are not showing the first game. So the BBC/ITV share coverage which means i will not see all the games as i took down my terristeral aerial beacuse of the better TV reception on SKY and i never got the BBC ITV etc where i live.

Where is mailbag when you need it i think a call to the star maybe needed.

Below a copy of the email sent to the irish times probarly too late to make tomorrows paper but maybe mondays or its sunday paper.

Following the uploading of the RTE programme data for the SKY service for
the next week. It showed blanks in the times where the World Cup coverage is
on. This has happened before in regards to the GAA coverage. Phone calls to
RTE say it will be shown but i have emailed them and no reply has been
returned i accept that the email may have been late getting their before
they closed for the weekend.

I strongly disagree with the way RTE have dealt with programming issues such
going on SKY.They are supposed mirror what is shown on the normal serivce
according to contracts on the BCI website but they have failed twice in this
regard. The GAA and now the World Cup.

I got rid of my normal aerial because of the better picture on SKY Digitial
but this has proven to be a bad idea. I know am going to miss the world cup
coverage and have to watch it on BBC which is not showing all the matches.

you'd better put it back up pronto. the Sky magazine also says the World Cup will be shown on BBC1 + 2 and Network 2.

While I agree that the above is the case, do you really want to draw attention to it and force the BCI to withdraw RTE's licence to broadcast on Sky Digital ??

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd prefer to have an almost complete service on Sky than none at all.

I'm sure that RTE are trying to sort out the satellite rights for these programmes - give them some time.

How stupid would they be to NOT show it? What programs (apart from porn) would they get better reception for than the WORLD CUP? RTE are a pack of idiots, but I think there money homing devices might pick-up on the world cup, dont you?

I heard some interesting stats re: the World Cup and RTE today. For each 30 second ad slot before, during and after an Irish game, RTE nets €20,000. That equates to some €500,000 per game for at least 3 games (assuming a good opening performance by the Irish vs Cameroon).

These rates are the highest RTE have ever charged for ads. It therefore seems strange that RTE are not going to guarantee a maximum audience in return for these revenues.

I have just E-mailed RTE. I urge everyone to do the same. I pointred out to them that TV3 could show the Champions League on Sky, so whats the difference withe the WC. Surely they're dealing with the came type of people.

I still think we will get to see it!

Who has actually said it's not going to be on? Writing letters to papers on assumptions is a bit daft, to be honest.

the epg listings show "world cup live" on net 2 this day week (next monday), if u hit the i button it gives the games that will be shown, there are no listings for next weekend.

Good man arkles, it is going to be on now i'd say fingers crossed. On net 2 on sunday it says no listings availble but that is on for a really long time. i presume it is a technical error. Good job i spotted this as i was on the verge of mounting a 30ft aerial to try and recieve it as my terestrial reception is crap.

OK so it was a scare. I thought as much. However, we were all correct to go mad with the e-mails, etc. Let RTE know we're on their case! The situation with the GAA on Sky is ridiculous. We all(should) pay licence fees and watch their ads... and pay their wages.
