As an incoming fresher applying for accomodation in trinity hall, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the accomodation in Cunningham house is like? I mean is it worth paying over €900 extra for the modern accomodation? will people look down on you for staying in the cheaper and older accom? Cheers!

well i lived at trinity hall and considered cunningham but in the end went with the more modern choice out of a need for some privacy and need to be with older students. i think it depends what year you're in and how much personal space you like... at cunningham you do share a lot of living space, but it's also more communal in that you have a whole bunch of people who you can become friendly with pretty easily (unlike in the rest of the buildings, where the overly secure doors make it a "fire hazard" to socialise outside of your own flat).

I lived there for a year. It really depends who you're living with but on the whole the people there are usually a good laugh. It was definitely more social because the rooms are tiny and horrible so everyone sat around in the kitchen and watched TV, so you get to know basically everyone sharing your kitchen, up to 14 people! Also, it's quite isolated from the rest of halls so the security guards are more lax and you get away with way more parties etc.

The downside is, as I said, the rooms are nasty which can get pretty depressing. I hated it for the first few weeks and wanted to move out. You do get used to it though. You share a toilet and a shower and they can get pretty gross depending on who you're living with (we had a blocked shower for months :/) There is no cable TV so it's just the 4 channels, and no internet points so you can't check email or anything. This is the thing that bothered me most about it, I felt a bit cut off or something. The walls between rooms are paper thin and you can hear EVERYTHING from every room but luckily the other girls were really considerate that year so it was grand. I know downstairs they were really noisy so that might be a consideration if you like your sleep.

To be honest it really depends on what you're like yourself, some people who lived in the 'moderns' did appear to look down on us cos of our crappier accommodation, but other people actually moved there from the modern apartments cos the atmosphere was way nicer. They generally are nicer people there. You just have to not expect anything fancy. At the end of the year I was dying for my own bathroom and that but when I did live in the new apartments last year I hated it and wanted to go back to Cunningham :D

Money wise, I think Cunningham is actually worse value because its not worth the price. I know 900 euro difference is a lot, but the modern apts are way nicer with way more space and more facilities. If you're not bothered about that stuff then I guess you might as well save the difference. I think you have a pretty good chance of moving if you're not happy with one of the other, everyone I know who applied to be moved eventually was.

THE1NE, were you actually offered a place in Trinity Hall Modern? I thought that they had not yet notified applicants whether they had a place or not. I'm waiting for confirmation of a place anyway......

The sports facilities aren't great, there is a basketball court but they closed it last year because it was dangerous (danger of the ceiling lights falling down or something!!?), it'll probably be open again this year. There's a table tennis table and a pool table and thats about it. There is also a 'music room' with piano and drums and a TV room.

There's an indoor sports hall which contains... a basketball court :) There are also, I think, indoor football goals in there and there's a five a side tournament held during the year. It wasn't in use all last year though, something about work being done on the ceiling or lights. There is a very small gym that you can use if you do a course in the gym in College first. There are also two squash courts, though one is used as a music room, and I don't know whether people actually play squash.

As for other stuff, there's a lounge with a tv, table football and either snooker or pool. There's a music club with a couple of out of tune pianos and some drums. The JCR is the student committee which organises events during the year. Have you seen the website?
