    I'd say he was picked as much for his advanced age (78) as for his conservative views. ie gives the church 5 or 6 years breathing space to re-organise themselves and decide which way they want to go in the 21st century, Remain conservative or become more liberal.

    Definitely a factor in his selection, I don't think that a long papal reign is particularly attractive to the powers that be.

    Have to agree with you on this Seamus, unless they just want someone to keep the throne warm so they can groom a longer term guy for the next term.
