Very stupid question but, can you change insurance companies half way through the year or do you have to wait until end of the 12 months? Are policies paid at the beginning of the tewlve months or in monthly payments?

Only thing you can do is cancel the policy and take out a new one with another Insurer/broker.

Policies are paid at the start in full by you. If you pay by direct debit the finance provider (Close Brothers for Carole Nash) will pay the full premium for you and then debit your account over the 12 months for the balance. This is how all the monthly installments for Insurance will work.

There's cancellation fees that apply to most policies so I doubt it's worth cancelling and taking out a new one unless it's a bike you really want now and the current Insurer won't cover.
