The Christmas whisk[e]ys

Seeing as the other thread is both 'beer' and 'today', I thought this might work (or sink off the bottom of the page quickly)

What whisk[e]ys are people laying down for Christmas this year? Its a fairly traditional time for purchasing, gifting and, well, consumption :o

Grabbed a bottle of the new Powers single pot still "3 Swallows Release" today and my last few purchases were Green Spot, Redbreast, another bottle of Talisker (can never have too many...) and BenRiach 12.

Will probably get whatever specials Aldi have and possibly Lidl's Abrachan also as they're really surprisingly good for the cost.

I've had it in my head for ages that I'd get myself a bottle of Yellow Spot. I got the Teeling Single Malt for my birthday and I've barely touched it yet (took a break from drinking for a while) and I have a bit of Green Spot and Laphroaig still to finish off as well.

I'm going to get a bottle of Jack Daniels single barrel this year I think. We got it in recently at work and reviews I've seen online say it's pretty good.

Have my eye on a Redbreast 21 or Middleton, but I'm not out of the country to pick it up in Duty Free until after Christmas which is putting me off.

    My OH loves the stuff...

Like most bourbon's, I find it way too sweet for my taste.

Yellow spot and more yellow spot.

Bought a bottle of cask mates, that's jameson finished in craft stout barrels. It's interesting.

    And I'll drink copious jameson!

O'Brien's Wines have their Irish whiskey sale on this week. I'm after getting my bottle of Yellow Spot early for €70. I've seen it in other offies for as much as €82.99.

I didn't even initially think of bourbon, but my sister does apprentice a mid range bottle being there. May just refresh my Bulleit but if something else decent turns up on offer I'll go for it

Yes. It's passable and more so at its price point.

edit: price, not prove (its 40%, same as most others) - bloody autocorrect

As said above its passable, Aldi also have a 10 yr old in stock, its quite tasty and very good value IMO.
I picked up a couple to go along with a few bottles of Mano a Lámh I picked up earlier in the year.

Anyone got a suggestion for ~€80 whiskey?

Bought Yellow Spot last year but wouldn't mind trying something different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,560 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Airport impulse purchases of Laphroaig QA (for something smoky) and Black Grouse (as it was exceptionally cheap) have me probably nearly finished for purchasing for this year

I got a bottle of Jameson Cask Mates last weekend with the idea that it was going to be the tipple over the festive period. It's nearly all gone. It is a lovely dram with a slight aftertaste of hops! I guess I'll just have to buy another :D

With O Briens having whiskey sale and me being in need of some Xmas whiskey I've decided on a bottle of Yellow Spot as it's just lovely and at €70 I'm all in but I can't decide on my other bottle. I need to choose one of the following.

    10 year old Bushmill - €40

This was my top choice but as I've had it before I'm tempted to try one of the other 3 below as I've not had any of them.

    Teeling single grain - €40

    Teeling single malt - €45

    Powers 3 swallow - €40

I'm tempted by powers just out of curiosity but I don't really know tbh.

I'll also be picking up a bottle or two of aldi specials when they arrive.

Speaking of which any thoughts on the 10 year old single malt for €30 in lidl?

Picked up one myself with the same intent and have already put a bit of a dent in it. Will try and save the next bottle. Very impressed by it really is lovely. Do like whiskeys but rarely buy a bottle usually just have the odd one on my rare nights out. Thinking of getting a scotch, got a laphroaig in duty free a few years ago I really enjoyed. Any other suggestions for a smoky scotch that won't blow the Christmas drink budget?

Thanks for that. Must sort it out this weekend actually so I can start tippin away at them, you know for Xmas research.

Usually I'm looking forward to the beers but this year I don't know why but I'm more swaying toward the whiskey and then just tip away at my homebrew for the few beers.

Founders breakfast stout though for Xmas morning with my cornflakes that said.

Good stuff. Pardon the ignorance but who is DS?

Also I've been looking at finedrams.com, good prices particularly if you're buying a few bottles. They have Redbreast for €38.40 excluding delivery.

Any other good sites to get good whiskey for good prices?

Getting married next year so planning on getting the Bestman and Groomsman some nice whiskey as a thank you. Needless to say if I'm ordering online I'll have to get some for myself too! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

DS - could be Drink Store or Dunnes Stores, but i'm going to go with Dunnes Stores as the rest and pretty much grocery shops and not a specialised off-licence :pac:

Where do you get the 20% voucher for Dunnes lads?

Would jump on the Redbreast at that price

Spend 50 now, get voucher for 10 off next 50 spend, and repeat.

Or even better, know a friend who uses vouchers regularly, and do the following:

    they buy groceries as normal
they receive 1 or 2 vouchers as normal
    give vouchers to you
    you spend 50 or 100, use 1 or 2 vouchers, pay 40 or 80
you will then be issued with new vouchers by DS
pass these to friend, so they are not out of pocket

This allows you to bypass stage 1 of the voucher process, so you get 20 off 100 spend, not 10 off 100 spend.

    I hope that makes sense.

Redbreast is 48 on that website.

    http://www.finedrams.com/redbreast-12-year-old-whiskey.html#/15-bottle_size-full_bottle

    The 38.40 excludes VAT.

With shipping, the 48 becomes 58.

It's 60 in DS Dunnes Stores, so 48 after voucher.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,116 ✭✭✭✭RasTa

You're still better off buying it from drams as you don't have to spend 100 to get the voucher although the Jameson and Bushmills will work out cheaper in Ireland thankfully

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,560 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It's Dunnes, with the shop and save vouchers. OBriens is a specialist and in the lists though!

I took delivery from them on Tuesday. It took exactly a week and Id recommend them highly.

If you are buying 3 or 4 bottles of "top shelf" whisky is works out a lot cheaper than here. I saved over €20 on a single bottle of Nikka Coffey Grain. Plus they have a nice selection of sample bottles. €10 euro delivery is a steal.

@Trond Thks for info on drams site - prices look interesting.....

Have unopened bottles of Redbreast 12yo, Bushmills 16yo, Powers JohnsLane and Teelings Cask Strength (bought in the distillery shop), plus a few opened bottles from Powers, Jameson, Teeling and Greenspot, so looking for 1 more.

Price of Redbreast is good so for the Redbreast fans out there - 12yo cask strength or 15yo?

The lidl vouchers in the tabloids today lead me to buying their Abrachan Christmas special as it became so cheap added to my normal shop. Last night years was decent but this may be a totally different blend

Thanks for any info. I know Celtic Whiskey Shop have the 12 year but it says out of stock on the website.

Sweeneys two branches (Glasnevin and Marino) are very good for more obscure scotch, as goes general off licences. I'd give them a buzz.

I have a voucher for supervalu plan to use it to buy a bottle of whisky. The choice I have in my local store is either Cardhu 12 or Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel. There both about €45.00

    What would get your vote?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,667 ✭✭✭Frynge

I would go for the black barrel but that doesn't mean you would go wrong with the cardu.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,560 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Black Barrel was vastly cheaper around father's day whereas that's Cardhus normal price
