Road bike for climbing?

January 2016 is coming soon, together with a new Bike to Work credit.

My current N+1 aim is a lightest road bike possible within 1500e limit, available from LBS or online as long as the website deals with B2W scheme.

I'm looking for alu frame (I understand I can get more bang for the buck here when it comes to large manufacturers. Am I right?) and possibly Shimano components. (105?) although I guess Sram would be lighter. I don't mind lower end groupsets as long as they're light enough.

What are your suggestions?

Do they accept B2W? It has to be this particular one, my corpo will only deal with these middlemen.

Yes they do. They are register for Irish VAT.

Basically my company sends the full amount to Canyon and then we internally sort out the BTW stuff,

For example, bike is 1500, That's sent to Canyon. Based on the highest BTW

It's 1500-1000, so its the 1000 is minus 510 and you are hit for 490 but you then have to pay the "over" 1000 of 500.

Bike = 990

I think.

They won't send money or do other accountancy themselves.

I think, I think, I know a fella who's thought outside the box 4 times in the last three years.

LBS told me that the voucher guys charge the bike shop a commission so the bike shop has no wiggle room to haggle a discount with you. You may as a result end up paying pretty much list price.

This seems to be the best value CF 105 bike at the moment...pity about Canyon's bad rep on customer service and the non-standard fork/headset/stem. Is the bike/price good enough to look passed those issues?

For a lightweight (6.95kg claimed) alu bike with full Ultegra, this Radon is going to be hard to beat for value at €1500,

Sizing is like Cube i think, 58cm would be more like 56 in a lot of other models.

I had a Radon on hire for a week in Spain last year, one of the cheaper models, it was a lovely bit of kit, I was asking the cap in the hire shop about them, he loved them, very reliable.

some of the al bikes are seriously light. changing the wheels on my caad to race tubs brings it down to 7.2 something kg. with pedals (330g), bottle cage and garmin mount. If I changed a few small bits and some lighter pedals it would easily be sub 7kg. Think its about 7.5 out of the box in a 52. Very stiff bike with aggressive race geometry. I've done a three hour spin on it and found it comfy. Raced it at the weekend and it was responsive, handled really well and fast. Really like it. You may get the ultegra version for about 1500 online. Dunno how that works out for you with b2w, but you should definately get the 105 version for your budget.

CAAD10 would be my choice too.

The gearing is slightly taller at a mid compact chain ring of 52-36 though.

36/27 is absolutely fine for me already, on a 11kg bike

I guess getting a cannondale on B2B is the most realistic - will look around for one

I would have already bought a CAAD 10 if it were available in anything other than stealth black (frame that is). I was in LBS last week and both Cannondale and Specialized will have the 2016 Alu frames launched in the coming weeks.

I think OP said they are tied to BTW voucher which presumably means LBS. Not sure Radon available in that channel.

After some research I think I really fancy the new 2016 CAAD12 105 Disc... bit heavy (8.6kg compared to 8kg for non-disc ver.) and a bit over my budget (1800e approx), but....

Interesting:

Raw frames are slightly lighter than the CAAD 10, 1o98 grams for the rim version and 1094 for the disc version.

Will be in a similar position next year and am looking at the Canyon Ultimate AL SLX with Ultegra. Its 200 above your budget but at 7.25 kilos and with the new Ultegra 11 speed its fantastic value ( the 105 5800 is incredibly smooth, so expecting the same from the new ultegra ) . Geometry is harsher than the Endurace, but should be a good bit more responsive for those hill attacks.

No, I'm not. Nearly clicked on the big fat BUY button last night.... but then, at the last line of defense against the New Bike Demon, decided to check what would be the real scientific gains of having a 3kg lighter bike for hills.

Speed difference while climbing an 8%, 5km long hill:

Power needed to go up that hill @ 11kph:

As you can see, feck all for 1500e. If I was racing or something, it would be different, but I'm not spendng this kind of money for 4-5 places up the Strava leaderboards.

I know that a new bike would improve my motivation significantly, but novelty wears off and then I'd be left with another bike, no space to store it and endless deciding "which one should I take today"

Case closed.

Its €750 really - that's an aggressive bike, so you probably gain another minute on the descent for the other €750
If you do 750 climbs, that only €1 per climb - seems like a bargain to me
