Since 1 July 2008, new irish passenger cars are taxed on the basis of Co2 emissions.

Cars first registered between 1/1/08 and 30/6/08 (including imports registered after 1/7/08) can be taxed on either emissions or cc based tax - whichever is lower.

This co2 based system uses data unique to each particular spec of car to determine the annual tax rate.

It is not possible to modify your car to fall into a lower tax band.

The NCT emissions test is completely unrelated to this Co2 figure.

Cars registered before January 1st 2008 cannot qualify for Co2 based road tax

I am looking to import a car that was first registered in the UK in April 2008. what tax assessment will it be based of?

If it was first registered in August 2008 no question it would be CO2 but really not sure if the car was registered between Jan to july 08.

or does it matter once it was first registered in 2008 it will be taxed on co2?

    cheers
    G

As far as i know if it was first registered in the uk in April 2008 then it will fall into the cc based tax if imported into Ireland .

It definitely won't. (Unless the cc rate is lower)

Oh thats good news indeed so then any 08 uk car be taxed on the co/2 rate very good as i might be importing soon and dont want to have to look only for cars that were reg in the second half of the year.

CO2 is what I was hoping for as it is a 1.6 diesel with 130g of CO2 hence why I want to go with the CO2. The text on the revenue website was not explicitly clear - fine for cars registered in Ireland at that time but not clear for 08 cars imported now...

Thank you all for your response :-)

Hi. I was looking at 2 identical cars, both 2010 1.6 hdi c4 grand picasso. Thing is both have different tax rates based on c02 . My brother has a focus which is the same engine ams is lower rate again !
    Focus €180 per year.
    C4 €280.
    C4 €390
    All 1.6 diesel

The Co2 emissions are a product of the fuel consumption, so for example a Skoda Superb with a 1.6 TDI would use more fuel when driving than a VW Polo with the same engine.
The emissions based taxes aren’t measuring tailpipe emissions at idle, they measure CO2 emissions on a test cycle of driving scenarios.

Manufacturers will often fine tune the car as time goes on to do better in these tests, so a car that was €390 to tax could realistically fall into the €280 band with these revisions. Other factors like gearbox type and even the size of the wheels have a bearing on the CO2 emissions for the particular model.

You can check the rate for a specific car reg number on www.motortax.ie
