Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Or is it just out of the back of the van catching speeding traffic coming towards them and also far side traffic as it passes?

    Ta : )

I got caught driving away from one. They got the rear of the car.

They do, to get the reg from motorbikes which only have rear plates.

I'm not sure if it's actually a functional speed check on both sides, though.

They can only detect speed from the rear (going in either direction).
The front camera is to catch bike plates, as said, and also for security.....apparently some people like to set fire to these vans ;).

    Thanks folks.

So theoretically if one was driving towards the front of a speed van breaking the limit, but was below the limit when passing, they'd be off the hook then right?

    Incorrect. Its just CCTV.

There is one camera and it is at the rear of the van. In the photo below, the camera is in the right window and the infrared flash is the large square unit at the top left of the roof line.

They can measure your speed if you are travelling towards or away from the rear doors. But only the rear camera can issue a photo that can be used for the purpose of issuing you a fine and points.

    Side note...
    - Well-marked, well-surfaced stretch of road.. check
    - Decently wide hard-shoulder.. check
    - Blocking what looks like an entrance.. check

Seriously, instead of that camera symbol on the back/side they should replace it with this - € - it'd be more honest at least!

Never said that the front camera was anything but cctv.
It can be used to confirm the reg no. of a speeding vehicle without a front plate.

It cannot be used for that purpose unless you can cite a technical source. At night, such a camera would be useless. And even in daylight would struggle.

Apologies:o.....I read on a different (inferior) forum that the front cam had a time-stamp to tie in with the rear speed cam.

Just out of curiosity, how do they issue speeding fines to motorcyclists if only the back camera is used?

Only motorcyclists approaching from the front of the van. Afaik they can't get a plate reading if the bike is approaching from the rear.

So how do they get people who keep the plate inside the front window at an angle and motorbikes?

No worries at all. The camera at the back is actually a very interesting piece of kit if you have an interest in cameras. Lol. It has a very fast reaction time to changes in light i.e. If you went from dips to full heads as you approached, a standard camera would take a few seconds to adjust and focus. This camera does it in a fraction of the time. Hence why a standard CCTV camera would just not be good enough. Also you'd have issues of evidence gathering etc if a standard CCTV system was used (Not that its ever been challenged in Ireland. )

Well having a plate on the front window isn't all that common, also sure its illegal. But it takes a photo of the entire car, they normally just send you a crop of the reg. In that case, they would have the plate in the larger photo. Anyway, thats a fairly special case and it would be down to if someone was bothered. Imagine you have 100 fines from a few minutes work, are you going to bother chasing down one thats a little hard to read?

As for bikes, as has been said, only works if they are going away from the rear of the van. So a biker has a 50% chance of being caught really.
