Anyone running this on Sunday? One of my favourite races on the calendar as the organisation is always top notch and there is a great atmosphere around the town with the streets lined with supporters. There is also some juvenile races beforehand too. Hopefully the weather will make a bit of an improvement between now and then though.

Yep, planning on giving this a crack for the first time based on rave reviews from friends and the effusive feedback on here.

Yep I'm signed up....have a 21st to go to the night before so I won't be setting a PB that's for sure! :)

I'm signed up. Really looking forward to it.

Planning on driving out to Dunboyne between half 1 and 2 on Sunday, coming from the Clonee side. Where's the best place to get parking?

Always plenty of parking in the school car park. If you are there before 2 you should get a spot no problem.

You could jog from registration to the start line? Must be at least 1k. A few people do strides etc on the road off to the side of the start line as well if want to do anything extra.

Registered for this today. Described as fast and flat, but there's a bit of a hill between the hotel and the roundabout. I'll be happy enough with sub-30 this time...

Might not suit you vitani but the train is real handy one for this race. Under used if you ask me but I don't think many know about it. Used it myself the last two years and for a cross country race a few months back. Handy warm up to the race registration of about 1K.

Hadn't considered it until you mentioned it but just checked the Irish Rail website. For some reason, I hadn't realised that Dunboyne was a separate stop to the M3 Parkway - if it's close to the registration, it would suit me quite well. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's perfect for registration. A handy jog up. Probably not much more than 500m when I think of it.

Thinking of popping out to run this on Sunday. Would have to do long run on Saturday though. :(

Last year it was 23 degrees and on Sunday it'll be 3 degrees. Only in Ireland.

So true. I don't care if it's cold. I just hope it's not windy.

Only started running in January and managed 4 miles for the first time last Thursday. Have ran that distance 4 times since in or around 35 minutes each time so am going to give this a go Sunday.

First ever running event I've even attended.

How long you been running? That's near ten minutes better than what I'm hoping for.

I run for "fun" and fitness. Not mad into it, but I would do steady runs 3-4 times a week, sometimes 5-6 times a week. Years doing that. Usually 5-6 ks maximum. I just hope when I finish the run that I feel that I have emptied the tank. First race, so I am not expecting a "perfect" pacing. I want to finish faster than when I start or mid race pace.

A runner's worst enemy is that weather. Swirling cross winds.

I did 4 mile in it last night. Was very tough. Doing laps round a pitch and on one straight the wind would almost blow ya backwards!

Same here, first outing since DCM 12,will be doing well to break 32 :o

Should have registered last night. Doh. Did 19 miles today so I'd be ecstatic with a PB (28 minutes) whether I can hold 7 minute miles after the 19 today is another thing. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,858 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Did 28:17 two years ago on a perfect day at this. Would like to break 28 but think weather could hurt my chances. Gale force out and I bet a snow shower in the race

Just back from this. Very well organised race if a little tight at the start and the usual walkers starting up front ...the route was very clearly marked out, big illuminous signs which was great. The weather wasn't too bad in the end, freezin but at least it wasn't raining, didn't have too long with a head wind either, it tended to be a cross wind or tail wind. Came in just over 25 minutes, which I was slightly disappointed about as I wanted to go under 25. I didn't hang around too long after but stopped off in the hall for a quick drink of milk and some cakes and have to say the spread was among the best I've seen. Loads of home cooked cakes. It took a lot of discipline not to stay there scoffing everything! :)

Same as said already, very well organised and a great race.Did it last in 2009 and i regret not having done it the last few years. Just missed the 30mins and about 3 mins off where i would hope to be but at the same time about 2 mins ahead of where i thought i might be so happy to be just back running again. Pity the cold made the support smaller than usual and made you just want to get back to the car asap.

Ditto. Very well organised. By the time I walked down to the centre afterwards, the results were already up on the wall - very efficient. It's a good course too. That wind was cold, but it didn't seem to be in your face too much during the race. Was hoping for sub 26, but didn't quite make it.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

Have wanted to do this race for years but just falls at a bad time of year for marathon runners.
Start line was a bit messy with people arriving late having no option but to go to the front with the barriers blocking them from getting further back.

The support coming through the town was fantastic fair play to the residents and supporters for coming out in the freezing cold to support the race and we passed here 3 times so its a nice boost.

Wind didn't bother me too much, it wasn't too bad really even along the dual carriage way and a nice wind behind us at the start and coming up to the finish.

My only gripe was the start line. Fantastic race, well organised and quick to get through the finishing chute. They made up for the start line with the large amount of gluten free goodies back at race HQ, to say I was impressed would be a major understatment. I was all ready to treat myself to cake and accept the suffering later on, alas I didn't have to. If anyone from Dunboyne is on here and can get me those bread and brownie recipes I would be doubly impressed.

2 min pb for me and all, just missed the sub 26 but after a 19 mile long run yesterday I'll take that with both hands.

Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Congrats Dunboyne AC. Very impressed.

edit: also hats off to precision timing who had the results on the wall shortly after I got back to race HQ and they were online by the time we were standing around with our tea and cake.

Enjoyed every minute of that. Great atmosphere, great course and I loved the spread after. Was not expecting to see the final results until tomorrow, so that was a very pleasant surprise.

Finished in under 34 and I'm delighted. I'll definitely be sticking this race in my calendar next year.

25 mins 06 provisional. Delighted with that time. Bitter cold there today. I am hoping the official time is lower as I think I started my stop watch a little early.

Edit: Net time is 25 mins 7 and gross is 25 mins 29

    What does this mean?

    25:29 from gun to finish.
25:07 from when you crossed the start until the finish.

Sounds like you started way too far back if it took you 22 seconds to cross the start line?

27:52 clock time and 27:17 chip time.
A pb by a minute exactly. Felt strong throughout. Spent all my time passing people out.

    Thanks

Many people started even further back. So my actual time was 25:07? Big crowd, very bunched together at the start, so 22 secs to travel 20 metres or so isn't too bad.

My splits were 6:27, 12:47 and I finished the last two miles in 12 mins 20. Took 3-400 metres until I got to run fluidly and cleanly. Sub 25 is in me.

Yeah, your actual time was 25:07.
You finished well inside the top 100 so you were entitled to be up much closer to the front. You probably only should have been about 5 metres back from the line.

Yeh, I was wondering why I was passing with ease so many people farther up the road from me. My friend did a 21:43. Great result. Think he came 23rd.

BTW, my placing is listed as 105.

33.08 gross time and 32.26 net time. Delighted with that. Only started running ten weeks ago and ran 6.5k for the first time ten days ago.

My first ever race and hope to run alot more.

Found that tough in the windy spots but the run through the village the second time was amazing - just broke my 24 minutes target by a few seconds! Delighted. :D

Great race, nice fast course (not the windy nightmare I was expecting), but I've never been so glad for the heat from the starting line huddle in my life :)
24:14 which is bang on what I was hoping for in advance of Connemarathon.

    Thank you organizers!

Great race as usual. Well done Dunboyne AC. Despite the freezing cold weather there was still great support from the locals and the spread afterwards was top notch. I even ran a PB to top things off :)

I'm pretty sure it must have been you who flew passed me and another guy in a Tallaght singlet on the finishing straight as you finished 2 places ahead of me. If so, you clearly had a lot more in the tank and sub 25 will be no bother to you with a bit more race experience.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I was a little bit disappointed that I didn't go a bit harder over the last 400 metres. Put it down to experience. Plus I wanted to run 26. I knew I had that in the bag, and I think that may have made me a bit "lazy" over the last 400.

My last two miles were 12 mins 20-22. So, 6 mins 10/11 pace. I was hurting, but I do think I had more in me, as I recovered quite quickly after the race. No coughing, chest pains etc. Sore calves was all. First ever run. I probably jog 20-25 ks per week. Need to do more mileage to drop the race times.

BTW, I just checked again and I am placed 105th, yet there are entries above me that ran slower times. When I place myself on net time I come in in 97th place overall (96 times are recorded that are faster than my time). You may want to check this too.

Official results are always based on gun time i.e. the order you cross the finishing line. Net time is generally what you'll base your PB on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭pistol_75

First time doing this race today. Not surprising for an event of this stature it provides serious value for money. Being my 3rd race in 4 weeks and the 5/6 pints last night I was happy enough with 28:34. Might have got under 28 on a good day so all in all a very good training run.

The only thing annoying was the amount of FG heads around canvassing although it was good to see Mr Varadker running.

I see. So, even though 106 people passed the finish line before me, I still had a faster 4 mile time than 8 of those people based on actual chip time.
