Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pivot hinged front door

    Hi, we've seen a front entrance door we like and wondered if its something someone may have in there own house or know of a supplier in ireland. The house plans are sized for a doorway that is 1.5m wide and we could be looking for the door to be approx 1.1 wide with the pivot hinge at per the image in the link provided. Door height would be 7ft.

    Pivot doors are very cool looking but they are a nightmare for both water ingress and airtightness.

    Do you have a exterior canopy or porch over the door ? I would consider putting one in if you are going to use a pivot door, as this will help with reducing the amount of rain running down the door sash and finding its way in at the pivot joint.

    The airtightness issue is harder to solve. On one side of the pivot the door is inward opening, on the other side it is outward opening. Usually these two different door types have different thresholds specifically designed for the purpose of inward or outward opening. The threshold used for a pivot door is a compromise and sometimes only functions with a brush system which is far from airtight.

    My advice would be to take a very good look at the hinges and the seal systems and satisfy yourself that they will satisfy your water and air tightness requirements.

    Finally, i think a pivot door of 1100mm in width would give you a very small clear opening. It might be better to consider having the door the full 1500mm wide.

    Thanks for the input braftery. There is no planned exterior canopy or porch over the door, its recessed about 8-10 inches on the plans and the house is north\west facing.

    Do you know where I would locate the pivot hinge for sale ? or anyone in ireland that specializes in them ?

    I am sure there are multiple type of pivot hinge available in Ireland, although the only ones I have ever seen are for glass doors and are not designed to worry about either water or air tightness.

    I don't know of any company specialising in this kind of system. I have seen on the net a company in the UK that offers a pivot door, it might be worth contacting them and getting some information about their system, and its effectiveness.
