Of all the games i have played over the last 30 years or so one game stands head and shoulders above the rest.

    Boulder Dash
Created in 1984 by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, Boulder Dash has a very basic idea.Collect Diamonds, dont get crushed by falling rocks and make it to the exit within a specified limit.

For quite a simple game some levels can be quite tricky, the best example is k1 from boulder dash 3 on the Speccy

There has been well over 400 different games most of them fanmade and the Fact that the game is still being played and new games appear all the time makes me say without doubt Boulder Dash is the best game of all Time.

Vote Boulder Dash and thank you for reading.

Ico, what a wonderful sound that name makes.

A sound that conjures up what can only be delight in the minds of those that have played it.

No, not played it, experienced it.

    Perhaps that word isn't right.

We walked through the dark, echoing halls of the castle, walking (and running) with Ico, with Yorda in tow.

We, swang from chains and hung from ladders, climbed dangerous crumbling architecture and made leaps of hope, all the while conscious of Yorda, somewhere, vulnerable, hoping she was safe where we left her.
    936full-ico-screenshot.jpg
And there, dangling over a precipice, we hear her cry as the dark shadows come to take her away, we have to decide to continue of rush back to her, beating off foes with little more than a plank of wood, swiping and rushing to rescue her, once again, from whatever dark place the creatures are trying to steal her away to...
    ico-140.jpg
And then there was the moment we traveled with them, outside, stepping into the sunshine for the first time, the brightness, the sounds of life, birds and green, so much green! After all the bleak stone slabs of the castle to venture out to the world beyond the interior really was like stepping out of an artificial prison of stone taking a first free breath, filling the lungs.
    ico.jpg
But there was always another reason to be dragged back inside, sure, there was time to waste outside taking in the sights, trying to scope the sheer magnitude of the decaying citadel we find ourselves in, the inhuman scale of it all, before the need to find completion took us back inside, back to the dark.

But our labours were always rewarded with more wonders.
And wonders our characters never understood, no one in this world seems to have any insight into the creators of this place, is it a legacy of our own technologically advanced world? Has this talent with mechanisms finally come around to be magic once again?
    ico4.jpg
Whatever the truth every switch and rusting device is magical to us, the player, to both Ico and Yorda too.

The grand mirror and lens puzzle is so wonderful in it's visual impact I was delighted, I raved about it to people I knew wouldn't understand or care (the fools), it was a genuine surprise, the other iconic moment, the scene with the windmill, flagged by the box art :(

So, my greatest game of all time is Ico, everyone should play it, everyone who reckons they love games, everyone who doubts games can amount to much more than a high score chase, a fetch quest or a race around in circles.

It really is a jewel of a game, if not the jewel then a perfectly designed and balanced watch, it's mechanism a tribute to the craftsmen who created it.

I'm not going to lie, Ico is quite possibly the greatest game ever made. It's just pure beauty.

But you know what? I played through it once, finished it, and have I played it since? No. It is but a memory now. A fantastic memory and one of my greatest gaming experiences - but still a memory.

Now on the other hand, look at this -

    metal_slug_desktop_1280x1024_wallpaper-329355.jpg

Have you ever seen a game which yells 'I need to be played! now!' as much as this?

Sure, that picture takes elements from many Metal Slug games. But the sheer insanity and detail sums the whole series (and in this case the first game) up.

Look at these art sheets. This game is visually busy needs loads of sprites. You think that would mean some shorcuts would have to be taken.

Nope, not in this case. Every sprite has a quality sheet like this. All hand drawn with utmost care and detail. All animated to perfection. This really is as good as sprite art gets.

I've never had a game which I've come back to, so much, again and again. And again. Since first playing it back in an arcade in the mid 90s up until now. Sure, maybe as far as shooting things go, it's not as smart and intelligent as Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun. The scoring system isn't crazy complex like some others. It doesn't give you seizures either - but it has one thing which I think is part of the major draw for me - lashings of humour.

So much so that I'd be trying to take the game seriously to 1cc it, end up getting distracted by something funny and die. I don't think there are many games out there you can say which actually use humour as a weapon against you.

Anyway, I don't want to say too much, as this game seriously doesn't need it. So will just leave you with some animated gifs instead.

There are games you play and there are games you live in. Little worlds that came alive, like these in Shenmue, Daggerfall-Skyrim, Stalker or GTA. Where the "main quest" can be forgotten in 5 minutes and you`re free to do as you please.

Well, you know where this is going :) The above are all great and good, FO3 perhaps could be a contender here too (>1 year in and I`ve done maybe 25% of the story) - but Pirates! were the first* and still the greatest*. Nevermind one year - my "Action and Adventure On Spanish Main" has been going on for nearly two decades now.

*(Ok. Elite. But this is about Pirates! Don`t ask why - I don`t know - it just is)

And thanks to the fact that Sid Meier is the greatest game designer there was - it is forever entertaining. Ever changing world with impeccable economy, "simple" yet immensely tactical battles, daft-looking-at-first but sublime swordplay...even the sailing itself, thanks to few simple rules requires much planning. And this just a design skeleton followed by: mutinies, treasure maps, starvation at sea, actual navigation, courting/marriages, alliances, trader/pirate/both?, storming forts, quest for your family, building fleets...Jaysis!

Not enough? How about one of the first ingenious copy protections, that`ll let you play if you fail, but at very serious disadvantage. Totally game-changing historical periods that are difficulty levels on their own? The fact that my 1st version was on C64 tape deck- loading time: +20 minutes, which I used for doing my homework? (ok actually that one might be bit of misplaced here)

    Well, yes, I`m a fan :)

I`m not gonna fight the juggernauts that are Ico/Metal Slug/others to follow on graphical level. Instead, here`s the most mundane screenshot I could find:

    152328-sid-meier-s-pirates-commodore-64-screenshot-sailings.png

...and that`s because it is all you need. Times when bunch of pixels fired up imagination perhaps even more than million 16xAA bezel-curved quadruple-tessellated polygons ever will. For me the 1987 one is still the best version - supertight gameplay that was bit questionable in sequels/remakes.

If you vote, I`ll tell how to run it on NDS - which is as cute as gazillion kittens ;)

    Mario Kart Double Dash
I've a duo of two biggest badasses in gaming history and I'm coming after some pirate game that was on some computer that wasn't the GAMECUBE!

    Mario-Kart-Double-Dash-mario-kart-5611110-1024-768.jpg

Mario Karts up until Double Dash were great titles but sense of speed was introduced in Double Dash. Also us mopes over here in Pal country were able to experience the joys of 60hz, it was my first taste of it.
The golden mushroom plus a star on the last lap of Rainbow Road going around the spiral booster part is what you will find in the dictionary beside the definition of going really really fast in Mario Kart.

    mariokart_3.jpg

Okay so it's not as revolutionary as some of the other titles here, not as 'cool', but I do not know of a better multiplayer game that is as enjoyable. Four controllers and three other players, who are just good enough to give you a challenge, is a gaming experience that cannot be beat for sheer fun:
-Your pulse rising when you hear Chain-Chomp coming behind you on the bridge in Dino Dino land.
-the vindictive pleasure of slamming into someone with a star.
-the elation pipping someone in the last second of the race to get first place
-laughing at someone when they get flipped on Peach Beach
-the frustration of getting hit with a blue shell the second you get into first
-six red shells and only three opponents to dish out the punishment
-racing around a track designed on Yoshi
-drifting around the place in Wario's Colosseum
-just making it into the cannon in DK Mountain and the shell cracks behind you
    -doging a blue shell!
    -teaming up on another player
    -the insanity of Baby Park
-the grulling grind that is Rainbow Road after completing 15 other races in two player grand prix

It's a multiplayer dream of a game and I haven't even touched on the battle modes and the battle arenas. The amount of combinations of characters teams that you can have and then throw in the different karts. Loads of weapons. 32 tracks including mirror mode and there isn't a dud in them. When you compare it to the Wii instalment it hasn't been bettered.

    mario_kart_wii___boys_time_by_princesa_daisy-d39mqq0.jpg

The game has the ingredient that makes a classic and that's lastability. It's certainely not the 'best' game ever but if it was a movie it would probably be Back to the Future.

    backtothefuture.jpg

Do the right thing and vote Mario

Ok so who here hasn't played half life? Anyone who answered no just head off right now and go play it and clear it.

There's not much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. Gaming today, especially with the abundance of FPS games, would not be the same if it weren't for this little game.

Right from the opening you can tell this game has something special about it. Immersive in terms of story and with fantastic interactive gameplay almost 14 years after its release it still holds up and it a cultural icon for gaming. Having one of the most famous protagonist in gaming and possible the most famous "silent" one. Theres not much more to say because everyone already knows how amazing this game really is

    halflife1.jpg

In terms of technically this game has also left quite a legacy. The engine used "GoldSrc" ( A heavily modded quake engine ) has literally created and shaped some of the biggest online gaming experiences and followings ever. Counter Strike and Team Fortress both ran off this engine and its predecessor "Source" was and is a revolution in gaming, portal 2 runs off source for example,.

So why should you vote for Earthbound ahead of any of the other games on this list? It's not the most populist games out there but I can tell you, it's far better than anything else on that list.

    ebfinish1_large.png

Yes all the games up there are great games, but Earthbound isn't just a great, it's something more. Mixed up within one of the best JRPGs is some subtle commentary about life and also the nature of videogames.

Let's just start with the game aspect. Earthbound is one of the finest JRPGs ever made. It sticks quite closely to the Dragon Quest formula, no bad thing considering how good dragon quest is, but adds subtle changes to the formula. There's no random battles in the game. There's no need to grind and once you get to a sufficient level weaker enemies are defeated just by walking into them. Also the rolling HP gauge really adds a tactical element to combat missing from most JRPGs that consist of mashing a button for every fight.

Even though it sticks close to the genres formula it's not afraid to make fun of itself and take swipes at the genre tropes with the likes of Dungeon Man who creates dungeons for you as you progress and how story ridiculous macguffins always appear at exactly the right time.

    z203106458.jpg

However what I think makes this game stand above the rest on the nominees is how much heart and charm this game has and how after you finish it, it will leave a lasting impression. It might seem light hearted and playful but there's a dark undercurrent to the game. The writer of this game, Shigesato Itoi, based the game game around an event in his life, walking into the wrong cinema screen as a 7 year old and witnessing what he thought was a rape scene, and how he was traumatised by it. Earthbound is ultimately all about experiencing the world for the first time as you leave the comfort zone of your home and experiencing how wonderful it all is. But is also deals with the shock when something awful happens and you find out the world can be a dangerous and scary place. This is wonderfully represented by one of the most disturbing end encounters in a videogames and the city of Moonside's dark secret. However it's never as bad as it seems, everything is a learning experience and you'll always have the people you meet and bond with to help you through anything that presents itself.

Shigesato Itoi set out to make the player feel these emotions after completing the game and he succeeded brilliantly. Behind the gorgeous, cheerful, Peanuts esque graphics and wonderful soundtrack, there lies a genuine work of art, one of less than a handful of games that I could defend as art. Those other games maybe great games, but Earthbound is that and more.

So please don't go for the populist choice, and don't vote against earthbound if you haven't played it. It's a game for everyone that is sick of seeing films like Avatar or the Dark Knight topping best film ever lists. Earthbound is the critics choice, one of the true greats like Tokyo Story or Citizen Kane that top the lists of people that know what they are talking about.

    Match 8:Turrican 2

Game, /gām/, noun. An activity providing entertainment or amusement

Why do we play games? Is it for a challenge? Is it to experience great cutting-edge art? Or is it to travel to another world? We play video games for all these reasons. But mostly we play for fun.

We Love Katamari is the purest, most instantly loveable video game ever made. There has never been a game so wonderfully determined to allow the player to have a good time. It is a game that cannot fail to put a smile on your face, unless you are some sort of manic bastard who hates the Earth and every thing (living or otherwise) on it (examples: Hitler, Joseph Kony, average youtube commenter).

It begins with a sugar rush: an explosion of colour, energy and insanity otherwise known as the opening video. It sets the tone for what is to come: a vivid, mischievous, nonsensical and endlessly compelling ball-rolling simulator. Almost entirely controlled using the analogue sticks, We Love Katamari achieves a poetic simplicity from the off. This is, vitally, not just a game for the hardcore, the enthusiast or the weeaboo: it is a game for all, a game that rejects the turgid, outdated mechanics that have proven an insurmountable barrier of entry to our hobby for others. We Love Katamari does not discriminate: it wants you and everyone around you to love it, and it's an enthusiasm that radiates from every single frame of this glorious piece of software.

Not that there aren't quote gamey unquote elements to it, speaking in a 'traditional' sense. It has a playful high score system, ironic yet loving, that rates your Katamari in terms of items you have collected. 'Your Katamari is mostly plants', the King of All Cosmos informs you (taking the role of his little green son, the Prince of All Cosmos) from his throne, and how can one fail to smile? He constantly nudges you to roll ever larger Katamaris through sarcastic witticisms and adorably disguised fatherly motivation. The level design is majestic. It has not only a surprising amount of variety for a game that is solely about rolling a giant round yoke around the place (a campfire level is a highlight) but is constantly upping the scale and breadth of the game. And always within short but perfectly sweet periods of time.

The sense of fun even extends to the story. Usually an afterthought, video sequences here are a reward, particularly the consistently hilarious flashback scenes. We Love Katamari also features an inspired meta-script that revels in the inherent silliness and redundancy of sequels: how apt, then, that as soon as series creator Keita Takahashi signed off on the series with this transcendent game the franchise transformed into a succession of dull, by-the-number sequels, ports and re-imaginings. Oh, how the creatively stunted likes of Beautiful Katamari contrast with the fiendish playfulness and satirical sincerity of the second game in the series!

Presentation wise, it's also nigh on impossible to fault. Not only are the colour-spectrum obsessed graphical stylings hypnotic 'til the end, the soundscape is also a joyous thing. The rare snippets of voice recording - Save the Pandas! - are always a cause for chuckles. Yet I've gotten this far without mentioning what, for many, is the selling point of the game: an extraordinary and eccentric soundtrack that provides constant aural pleasures alongside the plethora of other sensory delights to be wrangled from this particular disc. Na na na na na na na na Katamari Damacy: anyone who has played the game cannot fail to hum along.

Perhaps, for me, the appeal of the game is summed up in the second main level of the game. You, the Prince, are rolling a Katamari through a beautiful meadow of rainbow-hued flowers. It is an endlessly relaxing experience, a tremendous three minutes where all the elements (sound, graphics, controls) come together to achieve something special and unique: something, dare I suggest, perfect.

Heck, even the menus and level select screens are inventive and a source of great joy.

I have never met anyone who simply 'likes' We Love Katamari, and I have never heard a negative word uttered against it. It is, instead, a game spoken about in awe by all who have experienced it. It can be considered a shared bonding experience: friendships can be instantly forged through a mutual appreciation of the Prince's misadventures. The descriptions can only be laced with superlatives: this is a joyous artistic achievement you simply have to fall deeply in love with. We Love Katamari is a game that whisks you away to another world, and never ever fails to entertain and amuse. And, in that humble achievement, it makes a compelling case to be labelled the best videogame that has ever been made.

Sing it with me, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: OK MR. SUNSHINE!
