How can SUBWAY charge €4.50 in Ireland for its Lunch deal & only £3 (€3.53) for the same deal in the UK, that's more or less €1 of a difference.

WHAT A BLATANT RIP OFF!!

    In Ireland
    The €4.50 lunch

You're never going to believe this. We know you love great Subs, but we think you deserve more - even better value! You can now choose from a range of 9 freshly made Subs and ANY medium drink for just €4.50.

We still can't believe it ourselves. The €4.50 lunch. Genius.

The €4.50 deal includes any one of the 6" Subs featured below and a 21oz medium dispensed drink or medium tea or coffee or 500ml bottle. Not valid for double meat, extra cheese, bacon or any other extras. Participation may vary. Limited time offer. Terms and conditions apply. Offer may be withdrawn at any time.

    In the UK
    The £3 lunch

You're never going to believe this. We know you love great Subs, but we think you deserve more - even better value! You can now choose from a range of 9 freshly made Subs and ANY medium drink for just £3.

We still can't believe it ourselves. The £3 lunch. Genius.

OP I suggest you read up on basic economics. It's not a rip off by subway.

OP, always start a thread after you've eaten. Food suppresses anger.

On the other hand the foot long deal is €6 or £5 which is pretty much like for like using XE

can the mods please close this and explain to the OP that comparing prices in different countries does not mean you are getting ripped off when paying more for the same thing.

Actually ... OP... have you taken into account the prices of rent, rates, staff pay/pensions/PRSI, tax rates... because the shop owners probably have and because of the higher costs associated with a business in Ireland .... prices are higher.

its only a rip off if you are comparing like with like .... in the same country.

    To the OP

Food service is a labour intensive industry. Up to 40% of costs in a typical sandwich bar are wages another 30% relates to rent & rates and less than 30% relates to the actual food.

UK minimum wage for food industry is £5.93 (€6.98 using the midmarket xe rate- even though you don;t get this rate anywhere)

Irish rate for food industry = €9.31

    UK population = 60+ million
    Irish population = 4.5million

Population density in UK is far far higher and therefore a local subway in the uK will sell more subs per sq ft than an Irish store.

and finally - if you don't like it, you are free to move to the traffic conjested, overcrowded, highly taxed, poorly paid UK. Nothing is stopping you.

OK, lets put it another way.

Taking your net take home pay, how many minutes do you need to work to earn 4.50 to pay for the subway lunch deal.

Then take a similar situation in the UK. How many minutes does someone doing the same job as you have to work to earn the £3 it will cost in the UK.

In economics terms, this is called the big mac index and is a reliable way of comparing relative costs in different countries. Ireland always comes out as cheaper the the UK. So realtive to your take home salary / social welfare payments, the deal is better value in Ireland than the UK.
