Hi, I have set up an IRC channel for people to chat about Irish Weather. It may turn out to be a flop, but lets give it a try anyway. I do have an interest in weather, but don't know much around the theory behind it all, so this will be a good way for everyone to learn.

mibbit seems to be most successful for people, chat from the web-browser
    http://mibbit.com/chat/
(Connect to Rizon, channel: #irishweather and enter your nick)
    70i0wz.png

You can also use: https://qchat.rizon.net/ Secure! (chat from work) join channel #irishweather

    Chat from your phone:
Android users: https://market.android.com/search?q=irc&so=1&c=apps - free irc clients
    iPhone/iPod: http://www.apple.com/search/?q=irc&section=ipoditunes&geo=us

For thoes who don't wanna use the web-browser versions, use free Windows client:
    http://www.silverex.org/news/

    server: irc.rizon.net
    channel #irishweather

Would be good if 1 or 2 of the weather guru's who also have IRC experience could moderate the channel also.

    Lets hope so.

There is a basic bot with some fun commands for when people are bored.

The .weather one only seems to work for major cities. Cannot vow for its accuracy either.
    [19:27:18] <~Damo2k> .weather dublin
    [19:27:19] <Internets> :: Dublin, Ireland :: Conditions Mostly Cloudy :: Temperature 13C / 55F :: Dew point 10C / 50F :: Pressure 1005mb / 29.68in :: Humidity 82% :: Visibility 10.0km / 6.2mi :: Wind from South at 28.8km/h / 18 mph :: Last updated on November 17, 7:00 PM GMT ::

It should pick up.. I hope, a few people have joined, and left, probably because there is no-one really in the room at the minute.

See first post, mibbit seems to be the most successful for people. I use mIRC.

Just need someone who has a fair bit of knowledge and has irc experience and will be online a fair bit to control the channel, does this suit you?

    You leave password blank, Tony

You dont need one, but its pretty common on IRC to have a common name registered by someone else. You used the name "tony" so someone obviously had that one registered. If you don't enter your password to prove thats your name, it renames you to Guestxxxx, but no-one would have registered "thetonynator". You don;t need to register a nick, people only do this if they don't want someone else taking that nick when you disconnect. There is about 13 people in the channel now.

Ah right, thanks, have never used it.

Showing my ignorance of technology now but what is IRC? My best guess, is a real time chat, like instant messaging?

Can someone please explain a bit more what the different terms are?
    xchat? and what is mIrc?

Wondering will I be able to log on from this computer, can't usually use things that need real player etc...

Yup, all chat sites blocked :( To be honest I am absolutely amazed I can get on to boards, it used to be blocked too.

Should we make this a sticky?

More than enough stickies at the moment I think. But its up to the moderators to decide.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

I'm in there most of the time, its a pity more people don't pop in but hopefully it will pick up as the weather gets more interesting.

You did the right thing posting the link in the Interesting Links thread. I don't think it should have its own sticky.

Indeed, was on it a couple of times today hoping someone would be on it as it's the first night of proper weather in awhile, but alas, no-one was on. It was good craic the first few nights talking to some of the members here. Will be a great place for off topic over the coming winter months.(hopefully!)
