A while back we decided to make a guide, of places to see things to do, in Donegal on Google maps, we often get threads in here which consist of people asking "what is there to do in..." so hopefully this will become a useful tool for anyone planning a trip to the county, weather its a fully blown holiday or a day trip we hope this can help ya. there is a legend there to help you understand what the different icons mean, and the map is interactive so you can zoom in / out and move about, between the different items on the map. Click on the items on the left hand side and it will bring up a description (if added yet) and a link to photo's and website about the item (if available).

There are 2 pages of information to browse through, and its still very much a work in progress, any feedback, is welcome in here in this thread and if you have any questions about any of the attractions ect, reply in here and we will gladly help people can still suggest places / things to be added in this thread . Anyone can suggest places, so don't be afraid to suggest somewhere in the linked thread.

P.S. Please remember this is a rough guide, and locations might not be 100% accurate, also some of the attractions require a bit of walking to get to. In other words if something is wrong or misplaced, it wasn't us, he he.

Cheers Dannie, but i think if we started adding in individual pubs clubs ect we would have to do that for every town and we'd be here till christmas trying to add them all, its a great post though so i'll leave it there

I won’t bother starting a new thread so I’ll just lob this in here.

A question for the good people of South-West Donegal.

I’m away home in October for a week or so and I think a spin up that part of the country is called for. I’ve been up there a fair bit before so know my way round all the sights etc and I’ve also seen the map that was done on this (kudos by the way), but what I want to know is, if there is anything in particular I should look out for from the 5th October to the 12th? Particularly round Carrick direction as that’s where I’ll be based, but we have the car so it’s no problem going a bit further afield.

Also, can someone recommend a decent pub in Carrick/Kilcar for a pint or 2? And perhaps this one is a long shot, but is there anywhere there that do their own beer? Kinda a thing I have to try the local stuff and avoid the usual suspects. Though like I said, a long shot.

Just browsing while bored after the footie earlier and realised its been a while since I looked near this, see it has over 5,500 views I then see the top contributor to the views was being linked from some random blogger , great too see it getting mentioned

Anyway no harm to give this a wee bump coming into the season and all that and I'm sure there is more location's that could be added to the map so fire away at suggestion's

That's defo worth a visit and they've now got meerkats and a lemur. Good day out for the family, especially young kids (4-10yrs I think would enjoy most).

Hello everyone, my name is Leeza and I will be moving to Letterkenny in about 2 months with my husband.

We are from pretty far away, i.e South Africa and although I have friends in Cork (which is about four hours on the train away, I believe), I don't really know a soul in Letterkenny.

I am hoping that will change over time as I am keen to find work and build a life for us in Donegal county. So I decided to join this board to hopefully interact with some local people

From the pictures and Youtube video I have seen it looks like a beautiful place with really nice people and I am excited to be living there.

We are still looking for a home but will probably intensify our search once we are in Ireland.

So I just wanted to say hello... and see you soon I guess.

Donegal is beautiful ok, with some stunning scenery.
Hopefully you will like it and settle. You will find most of the people up here very friendly.

Why Donegal for you? Is your partner from here?

And I'd say its a fair bit more than 4hrs to Cork by train! You could drive it in maybe 7hrs.

We are moving to Donegal because my husband was offered a really good job here, we both have been to and love Ireland so it was easy for us to see ourselves living in Ireland.

Thanks for the info about Cork. I guess visiting is not something I can do everyday, same with Dublin I hear that is far from Donegal too, but it looks like Letterkenny has most of what Dublin has to offer in the form of shopping and activities. I have also heard that there is a chance we can see the Northern Lights from Donegal Co. that's been a dream of mine forever so if we can it's an added bonus.

You'll be able to get a bus ok.

The bus network in Ireland is known as Bus Eireann.

Plus you are about a 20min drive from the city of Derry, which is in Northern Ireland (UK), which al so has decent transport links around the island, both North and South. You'd be able to get a train from Derry to Belfast, and then on to Cork I'm sure (probably via Dublin).

Wow I have actually already been to your website TreasureBin I am a big time beader and was looking for a place to source supplies in Letterkenny. I'd say a car is a must, who may even need two if your partner needs a car for work. Getting to see the Northern Lights using public transport would be a challenge to say the least but with your own wheels you should be able to do it.

Thank you, I think we will probably try to get a used car or two to begin with, we are still trying to figure out how the car tax works. My husband would love to have a 4x4 as he has one now at home and likes to go off road... but I think the tax for those is higher.

Basically, car tax before 2008 is based on engine size.
After 2008, its based on emissions.

Cars brought into Ireland need to be re-registered with Irish plates, this is free for your 1st car imported into the country (should your husband decide to transport his 4x4 to here).

Cars can be expensive in Ireland, be prepared!
