DVD Recommendations

So I made the wise investment and treated myself to a home cinema system... clearly a clever move and makes more sense than putting away a few quid for an even more rainy day.

Anyway, among others, I watched Baraka over the weekend and fck me was it amazing in full 5.1 surround - I had watched it before on the computer and enjoyed it but seeing it on the LCD with buckets of decibels and thundering bass was a whole new experience.

As a result I am keen to get more DVDs that focus on a combination of visuals and music, along the lines of Baraka if others exist or any other specific recommendations. 'The Sound of Music' or 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' won't be accepted as recommendations.

Heima is good, not so much for visuals but if you like the Sigur Ros sound it's worth a watch. Didn't blow me away, but good.

Let's see - 2001: A Space Odyssey - obviously.

Animation - have you seen Animatrix?

I thought Watchmen was decent for a comic / graphic novel type movie.

White Ribbon could be good with that system - very atmospheric

Thanks to Toy Story 3 I just found out I'm a big gaylord. Don't know if that helps.

Definitely get Akira. Amazing, amazing soundtrack and visuals.

2001 was one of my first new purchases actually with this system in mind! - Picked it up on Saturday in that Lazer DVD shop in town along with Baraka. Don't think I've seen Animatrix or Watchmen but that said I've been known to watch films and forget due to an old habit of watching movies stoned :pac:

I'm obviously a raging gaylord too as Toy Story 3 was also purchased on Saturday and watched with the kids, loved it! The disfigured baby doll thing was a bit scary for me though, as was the monkey thing that watched for escaping toys!

Don't know Akira, will look into that one.

Yeah that looks like it could provide some decent entertainment alright... don't see it new on Amazon but various options 2nd hand...

Ah its epic and I wouldn't be a manga fan in the least. Pick up the soundtrack by itself because that is amazing.

Solaris for some great visuals & sounds

3 lux 2 videos of old were quite good

As you say - it's personal taste.

I just don't see why every big budget Hollywood movie has to have a half hour battle scene in it these days. It ruined Avatar and Inception in my book. Totally unnecessary scenes in both, just a lazy way to finish out each movie.

Scuba, you never mentioned, what actual gear did you buy? Projector ? Tv? Speakers etc?

Avatar too is an amazing film i never got to see it in 3D but even on DVD it was superb.

Thats a pity jonny, i would recommend if you can to get to see it on a projector at least as it is most impressive on a large screen.

Probably my favourite arthouse film ever made. Just... Insane. Very few films I would ever describe as a must see but this is definitely one of them.

Great movie, think the same director as Requiem for a Dream. Soundtrack includes Orbital, Autechre, "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" by Aphex Twin, "Watching Windows" (Ed Rush & Optical remix) by Roni Size, "Angel" by Massive Attack etc... Almost painful to watch at parts, but incredibly cathartic.

Yes it is, Darren Aranofsky......have it on DVD a long time now & it is what made me buy Reqiuem for a dream also.

I have actually had that DVD for a few years now and still not watched it - definitely digging it out now for some Friday session.

Agreed - I saw Avatar in the cinema and amazing effects etc, especially with the 3D but what could have been a really great movie in terms of the concept was ruined by the Hollywood slant - both from an action and romance perspective, OTT. I suppose that's what sells...

Just the audio side - only have a mere 32" TV unfortunately but small enough sitting room so it will do till I can afford a 50" for the attic, thats certainly not in the near future anyway!
