Bars in Wexford Town

    Am heading to Wexford soon and just wondering if any one would reccommend a few bars to go to help save me doing the leg work. haven't been in Wexford since I worked there in the early 90's and I would imagine it has all changed thanks:D

    For a start any of the pubs on Monck Street and Metro 17 around the corner on the quay.

    The Stores of course, and you'll find the nightclub is bigger than you remember.

    Sky And The Ground at the far end of South Main Street (where you may unknowingly bump into me).

    The Crescent (guess where that is) is a new pub struggling to build a regular clientele so, maybe not if you want company? HD for the footie though.

    Those are the ones I'm most familiar with, anyone for any more?

    Well then please stop saying its a no go pub if you have never been in there RadioRetro. I am a Laffan and i help run the pub. The pub had a bad reputation for a while which we have been trying to clear but we're fighting an uphill struggle with the gossip around town. If your old enough to remember then it was a very popular pub in town in the 70's, 80's and through to the mid 90's. Certain people drank there which gave it a bad name but show me in a pub in town thats never had anyone dodgy in it.

    In recent times it has a new customerbase and in all the years i've worked there i've only ever had to deal with a handful of arguments with a punch rarely thrown. If you don't believe me because i am a Laffan then ask people who have drank there recently. Sorry for the long reply but it frustrates me no end that no matter what we do to make the pub more accessible people in the town will write off the pub because of a few bad years that are behind us now. I see more fights and scumbags in any of the other pubs in the street but because of a more modern surroundings and bigger crowds people don't put much pass on it.

    Thenorthsider, if you want games of pool, a jukebox then try Laffans. Horse racing and matches are also shown in there. Customers are friendly and will talk away to you if you chat to them. Might not be huge crowds in it but the people that are there tend to be down to earth. Hope you enjoy the trip to the town wherever you end up. :)

    My two cents for what its worth is maggie mays for the beer garden and music or M17 if your looking for girls. Quay Casino after if you fancy a flutter!

    I love the fact the people will mention the Stores as the place to go and tell people to stay away from Laffens when you have more chance of bumping into scumbags and getting assaulted in the Stores, I drank in Laffens a few times some years back and had great fun with the regulars there

    The same can be said for Heffernans bad rep but a sound enough pub.

    You're not the tall redhaired guy that used to work in Dunnes are you? (Disclaimer; I have no problem with redheads whatsoever, seeing as I am one).

    I clicked on the thread thinking the titles was "Bears in Wexford Town". Disappointed :(

    Anyway, Maggie Mays and Sky in the Ground are good pubs. TBH I haven't really heard of Laffans, but the only place in Wexford I would say is pretty dodgy is the Stores. Still, it's a big place so stay out of trouble and youll be grand.

    I was down in Wexford Town over the weekend and had a great time. Myself and my wife visited a number of pubs and enjoyed it greatly. We went into the Stores at about 7pm on Friday night and the place was empty, there was only one other person in there, couldn't believe that a pub would be that empty on a Friday night in a busy town on a Bank Holiday weekend.

    to say that you'd find trouble in the stores is laughable.... im not a fan of the stores because i dont like big crowds and cheesy music for the most part but in saying that id go to the stores every now and then...maybe 10 times a year MAX!

    the reason nobody was in the stores at 7pm is because its a place peple go to for the nightclub moreso than the bar.... a crowd will be there around 9.30 onwards or if not in the front ar definately once the nightclub is open... most people go elsewhere first for pints and hit the stores later ....

    alot of places with "bad names" are always credited with such cause they might have seen one fight or dodgy person in there "one time" .... ok there is always gonna be places that are rougher than others but for the most part if you go looking for trouble anywhere youll find it... doesnt matter if its a plush hotel or an old scruffy bar... plus you cant take away the fact that some people cant handle their booze and think they are funny and "hard" after a babycham and a packet of wine gums....

    wexford has a good nightlife, you have to be a little bit creative at times and search out whats going on but lots of good quality music and nights and venues if people just give them a chance without the preconceptions!

    Thanks for all your ideas, looking forward to a nite away from all responabilities. I wouldn't worry too much about pubs having reputations as coming for from Cork thats normal for having so many different opinions. Will have a look out for all named pubs and we will see how the nite goes . Thanks again

    northsider.... just try the following... start off in the sky and the ground... good crowd, always people there and they have some sort of musician fridays either in the smoking area out the back or in the side / sports bar... also more than likely an acoustic or trad session in the front bar .... you could stay here all night and its good laugh....

    if your into pub hopping .... try the sky and the ground, south 51 maybe(hen parties)... then chocolate bar for more trendy clubby type stuff(funky house,rock, current bands)...

    move on down to the quay and try out the chaz bar...its a small place and a bit dusty looking but brilliant crack in there a good mix of old and young and they have music every night... sundays in particular being hilarious as there is always a kareoke night on! then you could move to haven for cocktails / trendy stuff... mooneys is a late bar and newly reopened (front and back bar) open till 1.30 with all the usual cheesy hits and a bit of a dancefloor lighting, outdoor smoking area with bar...then you have metro 17 which is good for music, big screen for matches etc.. and usually packed friday and saturday nights but only normal pub hours so till 12.30 ...

    then you have Tmorris(nice beer garden out the back), Loch n quay (darts) and maggie mays on monck street..... head into Le Sperenza(whites hotel bar on main street) if your thirsty walking the 2 steps from monck street to the stores....

    if your still up for it and standing after that go to the stores for your usual cheesy music ...3 different rooms of music on different levels and 3 different smoking areas...one top floor one middle and the front garden.... xchange nightclub also there for an alternative but doesnt draw too many as regard a crowd but will have more dancy type music as well as your chart stuff but good drinks promos in there......

    oh and for a more authentic type of bar you could drop into the Cape on main street or as locals know it "mackens" it has the distinct pleasure of being an undertakers and bar... great little pub for a nice pint of Guinness!

    knowing the northside of cork im sure you wont be frightened of any scarey people anywhere in wexford because as roumer has it "the northside" of cork is scary too... i know... i have relations there ! joke btw no offence intended :)

    Thanks wexfordwarrior that sounds like a good plan for a night out and will try to get to the bars you reccomend. No insult taken when making referance to the northside of Cork and I don't disagree with you but i have 2 soft southsiders coming with me.

    I worked in the construction of Dunnes in Redmond square a good while ago so wouldn't have any fear of Wexford either. We had a ball when we worked there met brilliant people and hopefully my next trip will continue the good memories I have of the place
