Also Limerick Animal Welfare take in stray dogs and find homes for them if they are not claimed:

Please, if possible, avoid sending a dog to the pound. They are generally only given five days there before they are put to sleep. If you can at all, try to find a shelter or rescue centre in your area that will try to re-home the dog and give it a second chance.

I can second the post about Limerick Animal Welfare. Amazing rescue centre, totally voluntary with no State funding everything they get is from charity donations. The couple of times I've found stray dogs I've rang them and not the pound and both those dogs were successfully rehomed. Great place to adopt from too, fantastic after care.
