This thread is for boardsies who are affiliated with societies to tell us why they're so much better than all the others. It's also a good place to ask any questions you might have about socities, since all the people who know about societies will be here already.

Any other threads relating to societies* will be locked and the posters referred here.

    Play nice, children.

*Within reason - I'm obviously not going to lock anything tangentially related to soceities just because this sticky is here
(Yo dawg, I heard you like to drive, so I put a car in yo' car, so now yo' can drive when yo' drive!)

With a record membership, 2 road trips, 4 large parties,a colours event, Vaticon (an entire weekend on campus devoted to gaming), free q-zar, a new constitution, paintball, a trip to the zoo, 2 assassins tournaments, ROCKBAND and running 10 events a week, last year was a pretty successful year for THE GAMES SOCIETY

It's our job to top that...

    LET'S DO THIS

We already have new events on their way to us:
    • On-campus LAN events (with our friends at netsoc)
    • A national intervarsity video games league
    • Bridge
    • Cripple mister onion
    • New and old CCGs including Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon
    • On-campus rubber sword larps
    • Rockband the beatles
    • Bouty hunter (a forum based photography game)

and many, many more suprises to follow...

These are of course on top of our current activities:
    • Video games - XBOX nights, Wii nights, Rockband nights
    • Roleplaying - live action and table-top campaigns, one shots, tutorials
    • Card games - tradional and collectible: poker, L5R, Magic: The Gathering
    • Board games - from jenga to scrabble, race for the galaxy to munchkin
And the old favourites: parties, coffee mornings, more road trips!!, Qzar, assassins, paintball, our convention.... and yes we may even go back to the zoo.

you really won't find a more diverse society in UCD.

If reading through this you can't find a game you like, come find me at the fresher's tent and I will personally find a game that you'll enjoy.

Also we're constantly looking to expand out repertoire. So if it's a game, if it's legal in most countries (preferably this one), and as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg (literally & metaphorically)..WE WANT TO PLAY IT!!

I'm looking to have a really fun college year; rolling dice, drawing cards, pressing X and killing my friends left, right and center. I really hope you'll join me. Let the games begin.

4)A sponsored trip to VEGAS for the World Dodgeball Championships in August 2010!

That's a lot to get for your 8 euro, along with plenty of nights out (we are a VERY sociable society!), two practice sessions a week and the opportunity to make loads of new friends! You'll also get to be part of the Irish Dodgeball Squad, which doesn't look bad on the old CV :D

The Caving Club is once again rocking socks - http://www.ucdcaving.com/

We're a small/medium sports club (~40 active members out of 100 members on the books) that enjoys sticking our heads underground and exploring caves at home and abroad. Normal weekend trips would be to either Clare or Fermanagh (main caving areas in Ireland), and we organise random trips to Yorkshire, Wales or further afield (We were in Spain this June - vids on the website)

No previous experience is required, or equipment, as we'll take care of you for as long as you need. First couple of trips will be the first two weekends in October and these will be geared towards freshers.

We also have a weekly training session for vertical rope techniques at the climbing wall, and we make trips to Dalkey quarry to practise our ropework when the weather gets good.

This year sees our biggest ever commitee, so there should be plenty of people to have a chat with at our stand during the sports expo - or email us (ucdcavers at gmail dot com)

Yeh they thought they would be too conformist and counter-anarchist to start a society, so they just drink dutch gold and buckfast and gate crash every other society's function.;)
No, there's been no word on that society so far. Better of getting in with FEE (Free Education for Everyone) they're kind of like Libertas except there's no money from America and they're not right wing.

Mathsoc - UCD's most buzzin academic society.

The place to be for all students of the mathematical persuasion (and a few who aren't), Mathsoc hosts magnificent talks on wide ranging mathematical topics throughout the year. These are always geared towards an undergraduate audience and are easy to follow. Mathematical competitions also feature heavily on our calender, with Mathsoc hosting the Mathematical Intervarsities later this year.

We do "normal fun" too - Tables quizzes, coffee mornings and nights out are all commonplace. There will also be a fun filled weekend away in the second semester.

So stop wallowing in your ignorance and join Mathsoc!

The Mature Students Society is the society for anyone over 23 studying in UCD. We have many different types of students as members, such as:
    - fulltime, part-time;
    - daytime, evening;
    - undergrad, postgrad;
    - People having a second try at college and people who never had a chance before;
    - People getting back into education after a short break, and people who haven't studied in decades.

What we all have in common is that we're not teenagers coming straight into UCD from school. We're in the minority, and it can be a little bit daunting. Fortunately there is lots of support for mature students in UCD. The society is a great way to get to know others in the same boat as you, make friends, get advice, and learn about all the support services on offer.

    This is our website:
    http://www.ucd.ie/maturesoc

I'm the treasurer this year. I hope to see you this Saturday at the Mature Student Orientation day, or at one of our events at the start of term.

    Ultimate What?

    www.ucd.ie/ultimate

UCD Ultimate Frisbee Club. We're a very active club who eagerly recruit new members every September. The season starts with beginners tournaments in Dublin and the a big club trip to Edinburgh beginners tournament. You can be as involved as you like with training and games three times a week, indoors and outdoors.

We are a very social club and welcome all new members to this new and exciting sport! Socials during the week and trips away at weekends provide plenty of entertainment and opportunity to make new friends while learning a new sport!

We have mixed beginners teams, an open and a womens team, and everyone is encouraged to play as much as they like and improve towards making the intervarsities first team.

    So what is ultimate frisbee?

    Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules.

    1. Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
    2. The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with endzones 25 yards deep.
    3. Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.
    4. Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
    5. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
    6. Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
    7. Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
    8. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
    9. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
    10. Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

More Spiel if your still interested!

"Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands the world over. It mixes the best features of sports such as Soccer, Basketball, American Football and Netball into a simple, yet fascinating and demanding game. To compete at the top level, Ultimate players require an high degree of speed, stamina and agility. The simplicity of the rules means it's easy and fun for newcomers to pick up.

Oh, and by the way, it's played with a flying disc
    How the game works

Ultimate is a non contact sport, played between two teams of seven players on a large rectangular pitch. The game is played with a Frisbee – known in the sport as a disc. The object of the game is to score goals. A line drawn across the pitch at either end creates two "endzones" and these are the goal-scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing (or more likely running) in the endzone they are attacking.

Players cannot run with the disc. When you get the disc you must stop and try to throw it to another player. By passing from player to player, the offence or “attacking team” attempts to work the disc up the pitch towards the end zone they are attacking. If the disc hits the ground or is intercepted or knocked down by the other team, then the opposition takes possession and this is called a "turnover". Possession also changes if the person receiving the disc is outside the playing area when he or she catches it.

The defending team attempts to stop the team with the disc from making progress upfield by marking their players. The theory is that the offence/attackers won't want to pass to a player who is being marked closely, as it's likely to result in an interception. As a result the offence/attacking players try to get free of their markers to receive a pass, while the defence makes every effort to stay with them in the hope of forcing a turnover.
    Fouls

Ultimate is essentially non-contact; any contact between players can be declared a foul.
    Spirit of the Game

Ultimate is unique in that it is refereed by the players themselves, even at World Championship level, according to a code of conduct known as "the Spirit of the Game". This places the responsibility for fair play on the players themselves.
"Spirit of the Game" is perhaps the central governing principle of ultimate. Respect for one's opponent is paramount. The official ultimate rules strictly forbid any action—taunting, intentional fouls—that might be construed as bad sportsmanship.

In place of referees, the players call their own fouls. In Ultimate, every player is responsible for their own conduct on the field. Since there are no referees, it's the responsibility of players to call fouls on themselves if the person they have fouled does not call the infraction hence; you call a foul on yourself. Ultimate relies on the honour system and the belief that no one will intentionally cheat.

Ultimates rules can be summed up by the concept of "Spirit." Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed-upon rules of the game or the basic joy of play. The purpose of the rules of Ultimate is to provide a guideline, which describes the way the game is played.

It is assumed that no Ultimate player will intentionally violate the rules; there are no harsh penalties for inadvertent infractions but, rather, a method for resuming play in a manner which simulated what would most likely have occurred had there been no infraction.

Spirit allows the game to be played without refs, without untoward aggression, and without long stoppages in play."

UCD Greens Society is an environmental and political group with an aim to promote green campaigns and issues around campus. As a small society, we are a friendly, close-knit community, with a solid core of regular members attending events and we welcome new members and friends at any stage of the year. As a proud branch member of the National Young Greens we work with similar groups in universities throughout the country organising national environmental and social justice campaigns throughout the year. This year the focus will be on how to live a greener student lifestyle, in addition to this we organise regular social events both on and off campus, including film screenings, talks on issues ranging from climate change to fair trade to animal rights. This year we will be camping in the woods in Limerick for the fifth year in a row and volunteering at Sonairte, an ecology centre in County Meath. We will also be running intervarsity social events with Trinity Young Greens, including the infamous Annual Luas Green Line Pub Crawl and Fair Trade Father Ted. So, if you want to make a positive difference during your time at UCD, check out our stand in the fresher's tent and join the fun.

UCD LABOUR YOUTH - Charlie Donnelly Branch

is as you might imagine the UCD branch of the Labour Party. Without launching into a party political broadcast, we campaign on issues such as our campaign against 3rd level fees, for a more just and equal society, for universal healthcare and for same-sex marriage.

If you're unsure about joining call down to the stand to have a chat or to pick up a copy of our publication, The Left Tribune, to get a better idea of what we're about.

Do join early as we do have limited supplies of material from the Party of European Socialists such as recycled notebooks, rulers made from old CD cases and the usual keyrings, badges etc.
