A family has been left distraught after their huge pet Burmese python escaped from its cage and strangled their two-year-old to death.

Shaiunna Hare was already dead when paramedics arrived at the Florida home which kept the snake as a pet.

Charles Jason Darnell, the snake's owner and the boyfriend of Shaiunna's mother, discovered the 8 feet long (2.4 metres) snake missing from its tank and rushed to the girl's room.

He found "the snake on the child" and bite marks on her head. Darnell, 32, stabbed the snake until he was able to pry the child away.
Darnell did not have a permit for the snake. He has not been charged, but authorities said investigators are looking into whether there was child neglect or if any other laws were broken.

Burmese pythons are not native to Florida, but they easily survive in the wild and a population has taken hold in the Everglades. One even burst after trying to eat an alligator.

Some owners have freed pythons into the wild and scientists also believe a number of Burmese pythons escaped in 1992 from pet shops battered by Hurricane Andrew and have been reproducing since.

The Humane Society of the United States said including Wednesday's death, at least 12 people had been killed in the US by pet pythons since 1980, including five children.

Only second to the pit bull in terms of trailer dwelling pets is the snake. Usually some kind of python or constrictor.

In this case it was an 8-foot Burmese Python that escaped from it’s impenetrable confinement of a plastic bag and a terrarium and squeezed a 2-year-old Oxnard, Florida girl to death.

The snake’s owner is 32-year-old Charles Jason Darnell, the girl’s mother’s boyfriend. Of course he did not have the proper permit to own the python. So far Darnell has only been charged with owning a snake without a permit.

I’m sorry but the only people I’ve ever known that owned snakes like pythons and constrictors are guys with mullets, 70’s mustaches and revoked driving privileges.

These animals are known to kill and eat prey that is many times their own size. If you have small kids owning an 8-foot python is not a good idea. If you do own one get rid of it and not just by releasing it into the wild.

the python is the problem here.

reading things like this always pisses me off:mad: , i mean a poor innocent little girl was killed because of her stupid parents ,

people should never keep any animal in the house that can kill a baby ,

i don't blame the snake it was only following it's instincts

It's been removed... and given to someone with a license to keep it. Pretty sure that license isn't hard to get though.. if it's anything like their gun licensing laws.

    people never blame the animals.

a pitbull savages a child to death and it's the "owner(s) fault"

those f*cking animals should take responsibility for their actions.

    scum.
