Mixing Sat signal and terrestrial

Hi all,

this may be a stupid question and if so I apologise.

I have one coaxe cable running from attic through wall to tv point. Currently I have satellite free view coming in over it ir BBC & ITV etc. I would like to try the DTT from RTE as I currently get RTE with an internal antenna and the reception is poor. Can I run satellite and DTT signal mixes down this cable and split out again the other end. Do I have any options bar running another cable and trying to fish it through the cavity wall?

Yes .. it can be done

you need a combiner at start where you join both cables, and a diplexer at the other end where you split the cables

They vary in quality and one I have tested is only 20dB to 23dB isolation, so your TV tuner needs to be good to be not overloaded by the Satellite Signal, esp on Ch 68 TV3.

Another option, disconnect and use the existing cable as a draw wire and pull two new cables (assuming the holes are big enough!)

You'd want to be sure your TV supports MPEG4...

You had to knock off the satbox in order to watch TV3 and TG4.
I then decided to buy quality (for a price).

Works a treat. For me it has to be Spaun if it comes to distibuting round the house like with multiswitches aso. You can't beat quality.

Interesting. I've a similar problem with Truskmore UHF also with the cheapo combiners similar to the ebay link you mention.

Am I right in thinking that wallplate/diplexer has a loss of 10dB on each output?

I must endeavour to try getting a fifth coaxial cable down the wall to the back of set, and do away with the combiners.

The ones I tested are EMP Centauri. Marginal loss at 850MHz on TV and 960Mhz on Satellite
