Well I a building my own PC and on the advice of more knowledgable folks on this forum I have come up with this build. Its mainly a gaming PC but I ain't a total GFX junkie so I am just looking for longevity rather than top quality GFX settings.
    build1sc7.jpg

Is it okay, any price savings to be had?

EDIT: Build Updated, Mod PM'ed to move thread.

If it's a gaming PC you might want to drop the Processor back a model and up the graphics card a model. Maybe go for a Core 2 Duo E6600 and increase your graphics card to a 9800GTX or 8800GTS512 (Important that it's a GTS512 and not a 320 or 640, more powerful chipset in the GTS512).

Cheers Terran, another quick question, On the site it has Boxed and and Tray CPU's, would I be better buying a tray CPU and then get Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 Processor Cooler

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭Terran

If the overall price is similar then definitely go for the tray CPU with the third party cooler, that cooler looks fantastic for the price.

    Looks very good.

    Are you going to overclock?

If you are dont get the P31 board, it has a 400fsb block, you will get max 3.0ghz on that cpu with that cooler and the board ( I have that board ), its a fine board for moderate overclocking, but it should be around €30 imo not €45.

Get the Asrock P35 for a few euro more,

HD4850 is much faster than a 8800gts, same price

Your case wont be in stock for 2 weeks, they will ship all the parts together so your talking 5 to 6 weeks if you wait for it.

    Overclocking results with a P31 Ds3l

    E6850 @ 3.60ghz ( 400 x 9 ) board wont do anymore ( has block ).

    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=401194

    E6600 @ 3.25ghz ( 360 x 9 )

    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=401303

As you can see the board likes high multis and doesnt go past 400fsb.

An E2180 with a multi of 10 for €43 can hit 3.50ghz on that board ( tested myself ) thats the cpu I would be buying if on a budget.Knock that past 3.20ghz and you will be flying past a stock Quad.

I hadn't planned on overclocking, but never say never so I will get that board -->Asrock P35, as its only a few extra quid and its nice to have options.
HD4850 is much faster than a 8800gts, same price
I looked it up HERE, but the numbers mean nothing to me, how do I tell which is better. Not that I don't trust you of course ;).

I am in no rush so the case delay is no biggie, but I might look at another case anyway just in case. This one looks nice

Thanks for all your help. :)

Good choice, that Asrock board is a steal.

    Good user review here

I find Guru3d and experview very good for card reviews.

HD4850 mathches a more expensive and heavily overclocked 9800gtx in every game, it would be 20% faster on average over 8800gts you picked.

Is it worth paying the extra €20 for HWV to do the dead pixel check on the screen?

What is the response on the monitor?

The ASUS 22 inch only has a response time of 2ms, is v good for gaming, I think its around 200 euros..

You really intent on Vista? I find XP much better for gaming and only requires 2 gigs of ram, might save you enough to get a bigger better monitor..

See how the price just keeps growing and growing..

AAhh but its easy to justify if you are gonna use the PC all the time, just scrap a few drinking nights..

I have an issue with the Radeon card, as in, as of this week, the NVIDIA 8 series card has hardware Physics Acceleration as well as Graphics Acceleration. On PhysX enabled games you'll notice a marked visual and performance improvement using the 8800GTS512 instead of the Radeon.

    no and no?

games take a huge hit with PhysX on the GPu ,

Ati has Havok Acceleration , and ATI IQ is always Said to be better , Plus its Faster.

ALso , 30euro case is a bit dodgey

:) There's no hardware physics acceleration on ATI GPUs. None.

And if you pull some new benchmarks you'll see NVIDIA comfortably in the lead.

I wouldn't call this comfortable. Ati is the best value for money ATM, HD 4870 is 15% less performance than GTX 280 for 60% of the price, after Nvidia were forced to cut their price to compete, was less than half the price at first.

    5ms, I was told that's all I would need on a 22" monitor.

Yeah its pricy but screw it, I should get a few years out of it.
