Good luck getting the saab. Welcome to the club. I have a 93 turbo now and a 900 turbo classic model. Love them both- great fun. Watch out for the clutch on the 900 model you are looking at. Obviously depends on the mileage. Rust is a problem also, particulary on the older models. The trims of the wheels gets the worst hit. You should be alright though. Horse of a car. Enjoy it.

Distributor oil seal is a known problem.
The gearbox on mine was terrible too.
    It was also rusting underneath.
    The fuel consumption was'nt great.
It did have great seats though.
The 94' model was the first of the gm saabs and not a patch on a proper saab.
Its the only car I've bought that I do'nt miss.

I wonder does the OP realise this?

OP - if you don't, you should do more research before buying any saab

what do ye consider to be proper saabs as a matter of interest, model/years?

Well, I for one lost respect for saabs when they were replaced with luxury and comfortable versions of Opel Vectras after GM bougt saab

I'm the first to acknowledge this reality in platform sharing and that most major car manufacturers use it.

unfortunately it seems to be the way car companies have been going for a long time,

pre 94 saabs seem to be hard to come by, even though they are a much nicerto look at, and drive apparently.

If you want one, you will find one. Start with enthousiast sites classifieds sections (UK). You're bound to find good ones there. VRT on importing any pre 94 Saab from the UK would be peanuts and sterling is extremely cheap at the moment. Saabs of that era are strong and well built. Buy a good one and either (learn how to) do the work yourself or find a good independent specialist and you'll enjoy it for a long time. Best of luck and keep us posted :)

I would recommend the "sleeper" Saab, the 9000, built up to 97.

Yeees, everybody will tell you it's not a proper Saab either because the body was developed in conjunction with Fiat ...but they're wrong, it is a real Saab.

The engine, the seats and the supension setup is pure Saab and very nice, the only obvious un-Saab thing is the ignition at the steering wheel and not at the handbrake ...bfd ...

The 2 litre turbo is a really nice cruiser with more oomph than the 150 hp sounds like, the 2.3 is positvely fast. Very comfortable, very spacious, practical and driven sensibly (if you can) not thirsty either.

The really good news is, they're cheap.

Overall fairly realible and durable, although they do profit from an occassional service by a Saab specialist.
