Been absolutely years since I seen this, so no big blurb from me this time, but it's definitely an interesting choice this week, great to mix things up a bit.

Its good to see a cheezy entertaining flick win. Patrick Swayze is a legend.

The reason I nominated this (apart from it being made of pure awesome) is the fact that a lot of people probably think it's awful so hopefully we can generate some discussion about it.

It really is a "so bad it's good" type of film. I think the fact that Keanu Reeves is such a wooden actor is what makes his portrayal of Johnny Utah so great and Patrick Swayze as the zen master, surfer Bodhi is a great counter to Reeves.

It's such a cheesy action film, pure popcorn type affair. Skydiving into the ocean so they can surf. The chase scene where Swayze throws the dog and of course the end of that scene which has a nice homage to it in Hot Fuzz.

Throw in Gary Busey and John C. McGinley and you have got yourself a nice little film that is not ashamed of what it is, brainless action and fun.

Anthony Kiedis getting shot in the foot is the best part in the film. Otherwise I wasn't too impressed

I have to admit I think this film is utter arse.
Now I'm all for dumb action films, if they are done well, but this is largely inept. I remember watching the last half an hour in my friends house years back and sitting their in disbelief at the nonsense playing out on screen. I have since seen other bits and piece of the film at different intervals, and they all seem equally awful: lots of 'lets swear and be cool!' dialogue and an awful performance from Keanu.
And that 'wave riding' conclusion: **** right off

When does Keanu ever put in a good performance really? He's an awful actor which is why I think he suited this film so well. Straight off Bogus Journey on to this so it wasn't even that much of a character jump he was just less of a doofus. That's the charm of the film though it really is utter crap but I can't help liking the damn thing.

Really astounds me how this film is FOTW. Utter rubbish, terrible acting, dire script. If it were in my toilet i wouldnt flush it.

This makes a mockery of film of the week. How on earth can this get on the list before Das Boot, which was presumably it's closest contender for FOTW last week?

The majority of replies on this thread highlight the fact that the film is a piece of sh*t.

There was some good momentum on FOTW: The Seventh Seal - Aliens - Raiders of the Lost Ark, this momentum has now been obliterated.

    I love this movie.
As previous posters have said it doesn't pretend to be something it's not.

I think it deserves it's spot.

FOTW shouldn't just be about "the classics", otherwise what's the point? You can just browse the IMDB Top 100 and be content. FOTW should promote discussion, how boring are the threads that just say "Great film", "oh yah, great film" +1 +1 +1. A bit of debate makes things more interesting.

Saying it makes it a mockery is a joke. The fact is it was voted for more than Das Boot, which looks like it will be voted in this week so no need to shed any more tears. Enough people saw reason to vote it in so there has to be redeemable qualities to it.

Quantity doesnt necessarily mean quality. ;)

Very well said Makaveli. It's excellent to have a film like this in every now and then to stir things up, and I hope to see it happen more often.

This is a great choice, brings back a lot of nostalgia. It's the ultimate summer evening movie. Without a doubt one of swayze's finest roles up there with donnie darko. It had a cool soundtrack too, lots of cheesy metal that suited the mood of the film, (i'm thinking in particular the last song 'nobody rides for free' or something.)

it also had one of the best lines ever:
"Listen you snot-nose little sh1t, I was takin' shrapnel in Khe Sanh when you were crappin' in your hands and rubbin' it on your face.

In my great tradition of voting in winning films of the week I haven't seen, I shall be seeking this one out shortly.

Another great week where a POS Star Wars film doesn't get in. Mannah from heaven.

this movie is about the height of keanu's ability really. Its one of those shameful secrets type of movies. its pure cheese, but you do have to love it really....

"If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love. "

"They only live to get radical. "

i wish i was patrick swayze sometimes :o

"Surfing, it's for little rubber men who can't shave yet."

It really does have some nice one-liners in it.

Well I finally found a copy of Point Break. The first 90 minutes are classic cheesy action film, well done all round. The last half an hour however is beyond ridiculous.

This reviewer gives it 2 3/4 melons out of a banana, and waves enthusiastically from the rearguard.

Still 100 times better than whatever Lucas can pull out of his arse though, so my system of "anything but Star Wars" has been validated again. Chalk one up to the good guys.
