According to Geraghty on Liveline the magazines in question seem to be copies of Dandy Extreme - a children's magazine. The way the article is written makes it seem that they were pornographic magazines.

This fact, that he found magazines, seems to be proof enough for him that some of these men are paedophiles.
having sex with each other isn't perverted, but at the side of a park with a boys magazine (imo) is a bit strange.

@ Panda, your point is correct. The article dealt with every issue but the one it was suppoosed to do. It did it in an absurd fashion and for the bits in it that did deal with the issue, it was exaggerated greatly.

Just a side-note, I would support any attempts that Boards.ie makes to step in and help castlebar.ie. The website has just become a victim of a silly newspaper article supposed to be about "gay perverts".

We only have the esteemed Tony Geraghty's word that the children's magazines were involved in any way. Did he even claim that he had seen a man with the magazines or was it just that he found them and that's enough for him? Obviously there's absolutely no chance that a children's comic could turn up near a children's playground and have been brought there by.... eh.... children maybe?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that it's ok for someone to be getting off while looking at kids. I'm just questioning whether that was happening at all or if Mr Geraghty's imagination was running a bit wild.

    Really? I don't think so.

Apparently this is going to be on Liveline again today.

It's really screwing castlebar over in so many ways. Even one appearance on liveline was guaranteed that the sh#t would be stirred even further.

    This has to end somewhere.
    Really? I don't think so.
    Corrected. Thanks. :o

Threat of legal action removed from castlebar.ie. See full statement below. The caps are not mine!

    http://www.midwestirishradio.com/newsdetails.php?nid=1559&action=newsdetails

THREAT OF LEGAL ACTION AGAINST CASTLEBAR WEBSITE HAS BEEN LIFTED Jun 12 2008
THE EDITOR OF THE MAYO ECHO HAS WITHDRAWN THE THREAT OF LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THE WEBSITE castlebar.ie, WHICH CLOSED AT THE END OF LAST MONTH. THE MAYO ECHO HAD THREATENED LEGAL ACTION, FOLLOWING A NUMBER OF POSTINGS ON THE WEBSITE, IN CONNECTION WITH AN ARTICLE THE FREESHEET NEWSPAPER CARRIED ABOUT ALLEGED ACTIVITIES AT LOUGH LANNAGH IN CASTLEBAR. THE castlebar.ie WEBSITE HAS NOW BEEN RESTORED, AND IN A STATEMENT TO MIDWEST RADIO, THE MAYO ECHO’S EDITOR TONY GERAGHTY THANKS THOSE BEHIND THE WEBSITE FOR REVERSING THEIR DECISION TO CLOSE IT, AS HE SAYS IT’S A VALUABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE. MR GERAGHTY SAYS THE MAYO ECHO ISSUED A COMPLAINT TO THE MODERATORS OF THE SITE OVER A SMALL NUMBER OF POSTINGS, INCLUDING A THREAT BY ONE INDIVIDUAL TO BURN THE OFFICES OF THE MAYO ECHO. THE WEBSITE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CLOSED, BUT MR GERAGHTY SAYS IT WAS NEVER HIS INTENTION THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN. HE SAYS THE MAYO ECHO RECOGNISES THAT THOSE BEHIND THE WEBSITE OPERATE ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS. HE ALSO SAYS THE OFFENSIVE POSTINGS HAVE NOW BEEN REMOVED, AND ANY THREAT OF LEGAL ACTION BY HIM OR THE MAYO ECHO AGAINST ANYONE INVOLVED IN THE WEBSITE IS NOW WITHDRAWN.

Good. Now we only have to worry about the two guys identified in the 'paper', one by photo and the other whose car registration was photographed and published, and the newsagents of Castlebar, where sales of Dandy Extreme have dropped right off for some strange reason.

    Not your ornery onager

So what's the local feeling towards thye Mayo Echo over there now? I understand it was never seen as an 'important' newspaper, but has it been damaged and shamed by the whole furore or has it managed to 'dodge the bullet' so to speak?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yes, although the Mayo advertiser always surpassed it for quality, they were always left together in newsagents and in local businesses. In Newsagents, the echo is now stacked at the back in most places and in local businesses it isn't there at all, just the advertiser.
