    Seems like Ubuntu is killing laptop hard drives.

    The bug report also contains a work around for the problem, I havent tried it.

    Sounds worrying, and a bit disappointing from Ubuntu. I hope there's an official update pushed out for this soon. I don't want to go changing ACPI config files! :(

    if you want to keep an eye on your hdd using s.m.a.r.t

    sudo smartctl -Hc /dev/sda
    this will show your hdd status

    sudo smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda
    will show what s.m.a.r.t knows

    It might have been unfair, but forewarned is forearmed.

    I am a big fan of Ubuntu to, but i would rather know about a problem and its lightly cause then be kept in the dark

    How accurate are those posts, is ubuntu to blame despite its denial?
    Just got my laptop, was goin to install ubuntu today... should I go ahead, is it possible ubuntu will release a patch?

    same question as above: was planning on getting a new laptop in the next month or so and switching from windows to ubuntu, but all this talk about hard drive problems has spooked me a little, don't want to be damaging a brand-new hard-drive. Should there be a permanent fix in the near future?

    it has been resolved and it does not affect every hard drive on the face of the earth.

    install ubuntu, run the checks, one hour of running it isn't going to make your hard drive blow up.

    according to reports a laptop hdd can have 600000 cycles and due to the bug your hdd would last apparently only 417 days. i'm sure you can handle it for one :), to see if your affected.

    besides all that random garble, id be surprised to get 4 years out of a laptop hard drive due to wear and tare, in which time your going to replace the damn thing anyway !:P

    also you can buy 16gb internal flash hard drives and 32gb ones are going to be released soon.

    cuts down battery use and improves performance.

    If you use windows, check if you don't have similar problem there and if you have it (like I did) you can fix it with windows version of hdparm.


    my computer here has some nice facts, its 10 months old, and the hard drive so far has been working for 305 days. in fact i dont think this computer was ever really off :P, only reboots etc.
