BBC2 is showing The Red Shoes (1948) this afternoon, from 14:20. Possibly Powell & Pressburger's finest hour, with a startling performance from ballerina Moira Shearer in her first acting role.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

That reminds me, wasn't there an actor called Red Buttons!

True Movies 2 (yes them!) are screening two European classics of the 70s which share the theme of WW2 -

7 PM - the Garden of the Finzi-Continis
9 PM - the Marriage of Maria Braun

Just a warning that True Movies broadcasts at a lowish SD rate so expect mediocre visual quality even if the transfer copy is good.

I don't know, quite possibly. The Wicker Man is a brilliant movie.

This coming Friday 8 April, 23:05 on BBC2: A Serious Man. It's the Coen Brothers at their weirdest and most explicitly Jewish. I only got some of the references last time and look forward to seeing it again. I was particularly struck by the scene with the young rabbi (Simon Helberg): talking absolute nonsense - or is he? - and what's the significance of the date on the calendar? Oy.

How I Live Now is on Film4 at about 11:30 tonight.

It was marketed as a teen post apocalypse love story type thing which did it no favours. There is a bit of a weird romance in there but it's really a great film. Saoirse Ronan is great, as usual, and it's really beautifully shot.

The wonderful vampire horror comedy Fright Night is on Film 4 at 22:55 and +1 an hour later.

Its the original, not the Colin Farrell excretion of a remake.

Cop Land on UTV tonight, 11PM. (Sorry for the short notice.) Probably Sylvester Stallone's finest straight dramatic performance, as the chief of police of a small New Jersey town. The town is home to many New York cops, some of them corrupt, and he's the butt of their jokes, having never made it to the "big leagues" because of an injury suffered while saving the life of a local woman. Now he's struggling to fight the corruption and his own personal demons at the same time.
