Never mind the song never mind the band. What is the BEST rock solo of all time??

This my friend is the question i ask of you!!

    I'd have to say

Feed my Frankenstein - Alice Cooper

    or

    Emerald - Thin Lizzy

Out of those two, Emerald, absolutely hands ****ing down!

    Personally, my favorites would be...

    Anathema - Sleepless
    Opeth - The Leper Affinity

Children of Bodom - Kissing the Shadow

Not a rock solo, but best solo ever in a metal song :)

It's still a rock solo. maybe some should say 'oh thats not a rock solo, its an acid house heavy metal, psychadelic happy grunge solo. '

Its all rock. you like smashing pumpkins or Opeth youre still a SMELLY ROCER;)

Rock solo... Hmmm... I'll have to go for Slash's solo on Paradise City for that one.

    Awesome.

Probably Tornado Of Souls, Marty Friedman on Megadeth's Rust In Peace album. Tasteful as f*ck and incredibly impressive technically too. It always gets my undivided attention. Special mention to Chris Poland's work on Peace Sells...

Hell yeah, Tornado of Souls and Comfortably Numb are my all time favourites.

I love the solo in the middle of Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper.

    My Favourties include,
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road
Eric Clapton - Let It Rain, Crossroads
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien, Midnight and Mystical Potatoe Head Groove thing
Steve Vai - Eugene's Trick bag, Bad Horsie, Erotic Nightmares.
    Vince Gill - Liza Jane.
Brad Paisley - The Nervous Breakdown
    Jeff Beck - Becks Bolero
Slash - Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, Patience, Civil War
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird, Sweet Home Alabama
Rory Gallagher - Messin with the Kid, Laundromat, Out on the Western Plains.
    Hendrix - Little Wing,
SRV - Little Wing (better than Hendrixs), Texas Flood.
Eagles - Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane

I love many more but I think its impossible to choose a solo thats best, My altime favourite is "Sultans of Swing" Especially the live versions, but I never can pick my mouth of the floor when listening to Satriani.

personally I believe kurt cobain and great guitar solo should not be mentioned in the same sentence. You obviosuly have not heard much guitar playing if you think he didn't anything that was great!!......... That ****er single handly destroyed guitar solo's for a decade, between Nirvana ----> Darkness, guitar solos in mainstream music were non existent! I vote for Kort Cobain in producin the worst guitar solos Ive ever heard in my life, smells like teen spirit solo sucks ass!!!

Cobain was a very "average" guitarist. None of his solos were great. They were appropriate to his riffs but they weren't great. His riffs were good though.

Not necessarily great solos but two I like a lot and can't seem to get out of my head lately are QOTSA's Noone Knows and Pantera's Mouth for War. Also love the solo in Slayer's Spirit in Black

Aren't we all forgetting Hendrix' Voodoo Chile?

I would also second Emerald by Thin Lizzy, along with 'The Black Rose'

I'd prefer "Still believe in you" solo to Emerald. I never got into emerald that much... On a side note I seen a nice looking new double cd Thin Lizzy Best Of. Very nice. nothing new though.

Have a look in HMV next time you're around and have alook for the Thin Lizzy "book" album thiungy. It's 4 cd's inside a book of Lizzy's history. There's other ones available, like Hendrix, etc too.

OK, some may not regard this as a solo, but the six and a half minutes of triple guitar harmony that makes up the bulk of Rain on Tin by Sonic Youth is guitar playing par excellence.

Haven't heard the song in a while, but is there actually a solo in there?!

<edit>Sorry... I just copped on - there's a wee solo in there alright. Nothin special.

Most of Guns N Roses (read: Slash) solos were excellent.
